Saman Dance

Saman or the Dance of Thousand Hands is one of the most popular dance in Indonesia. Its origin
from Gayo ethnic group from Gayo Lues, Aceh Province, Sumatra, and this dance usually
performed to celebrate important events. Them call the Saman Dance because it was created by a
Syekh his names Saman, he is an Aceh cleric in the XIV century from Gayo. Originally, this Saman is
the name of a game called Pok Ane, and then this game added with lyrics of praise to Allah. SWT.,
and now Saman is classified the dance of entertaintment. As times passed, on November 24/2011,
UNESCO officialy recognized Aceh’s Traditional Saman Dance as Masterpiece of Oral an Intangible
Heritage of Humanity, which need UNESCO’s urgent protection.

After the Saman Dance get official recognition from UNESCO, The ASEAN Tourism Association
(ASENTA) given the name Saman Dance as the best ASEAN cultural preservation effort on the 25th
ASEANTA Awards for excellence 2012. Start from there, Aceh’s Saman Dance get some awards.
They are “The Best Performances” in The International Folk Festival (Yunani on July 2013) and
“Absolute World Champion of Folklore 2014” in the event “IV World Championship of Folklore
2014” in Bulgaria. Because The Saman Dance amaze the audiance, that’s awards be able to get.

In the new news, the Saman Dance amaze the audiance again with their performances in
Colosseum, Roma on Thursday (2/3/2017). The show is packed in the form of street performances,
attracting tourists attention who visit the favorite tourist in Italy. With The unique and colorful
costumes they wear, make 9 Indonesian dancers are target photos with tourists. And the purpose
of street performances do for promoting the beauty of Indonesian culture.
