To: Whom it may concern
Leviton Power Quality Engineering (PQE) does not recommend the use of 10-mode
surge protective devices (SPDs). A 10-Mode SPD is not recommended due to the
power system degradation that might occur. During operation of a 10-mode SPD,
the energy observed on one phase may be transferred to a second phase and
compromise the device’s ability to provide a clean 60 Hz signal. Ten mode
products add an MOV from line to line. When a surge event is experienced the
additional MOV will divert the energy from one line to a second and then to ground
as well as diverting from both lines to ground.
It’s often noted that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and
this fact applies in the application of surge protection. This analogy is useful in the
application of surge protection because the shortest distance to divert surge energy is
directly from line to ground. Surge energy is an undesirable event and diverting it
to ground is the shortest and most effective way to eliminate this undesirable event.
The advantage of incorporating 10-mode products is minimal compared to the
disadvantages and the advantage is usually related to total MOV count. It’s
Leviton’s position that additional MOV’s would be better utilized in a line to ground
parallel configuration which increases the line to ground surge current capability.
