Assignment (A): A Return to an Uncertain Future
   Case Fact: Andreas Webber is of German origin and has about 7 years of experience of
    working in the United States.
        o He is a hardworking and dedicated employee.
        o International experience was a must for those young managers wishing to become
           a part of the senior management at the corporate headquarters.
        o He wishes to return to Germany because his wife’s mother is alone and so do his
           parents wish for them to come back. Also, his wife insists that their children are
           nowhere German in anyway and that the children consider themselves American.
   Central Dilemma: Whether or not Andreas should move back to Germany after
   Recommended Solution: No.
   Rationale behind recommendation: Transfer to Germany – reduced power in terms of
    chain of command, thus, no involvement in decision making in important/sensitive
    decisions.
   Instead, they should try certain other things:
        o Should actually try to ensure that they could relocate the parents.
        o Try to get admission into a school that offers and educational system that is similar
           to that taught in Germany
        o Should become a part of the German community that is part (based on the
           assumption that there are enough German citizens, therefore their children can
           interact with other German children, thereby increasing their awareness and
           familiarity with the German language as well as customs and traditions).

Jaguar or Bluebird? (A): Mark Chan’s Decision to Stay
Overseas or Return Home after Expatriate Assignment
   Case Facts: Mark Chan started off his career working in mainly overseas projects in
    counties such as Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
        o Working overseas was essential to get senior management positions in the
           organization.
        o He wishes to go back because his wife’s father is unwell therefore needs to be
           looked after. Moreover, their children are not getting the kind of upbringing as
           they did.
   Central Dilemma: Should Mark return to Singapore after having worked for over 8 years
    of working outside his home country?
   Recommended Solution: Yes, return home
   Rationale behind recommendation: Wife can continue to work as well as look after her
    parents. Thus, offset of the income.
        o Alternatively, he could wait for an opening in the future OR transfer to another
           organization in Singapore in the senior management position. This would mean
           that his standard of living would be maintained to a larger extent and the need for
           his wife to work immediately would reduce therefore, should could look after her
           parents with greater ease.
        o Children will find it easier to adjust to the educational, cultural norms of
           Singapore.
