Photomontage is always more active than mere photogra-
phy. The latter only touches on one aspect of action. Only a
composition of photographs can provide an adequate pic-
ture of the dialectics and dynamics of modern life.

During their stay in Paris in the mid twenties Štyrský and Toyen
produced a few beautiful book covers, that are today highlights
in the world of modernist book lovers and other 20th century
‘typochondriacs’. ‘During 1925-1927, the two artists worked
jointly on book covers, and some of these productions
undoubtedly figure among the classics of Poetist book design’.
(Toman). These 9 books established their names as important
book designers, not withstanding the rather limited number of
these publications.

Their return to Prague in 1928 however, marked the beginning

of a vast production of designs for book covers, bindings and
illustrations by each of them. Štyrský worked for the publishing
house Sfinx (B.Janda), while Toyen was invited by Melantrich
to illustrate the covers of their editions. It is assumed that,
coming back from Paris, they needed this work to provide an
income. However, many other artist and architects, such as
Èapek, Kalivoda, Krejcar, Kroha, Muzika, Šima, Teige,
Tittelbach, Zelenka, were also involved in book design and
typography. The spirit of the interbellum, the believe in “art
for the masses”, was no doubt another reason why so many
members of the artistic avant-garde participated in these
commercial enterprises, and not only for making money with
“low” art in order to be able to pursue “high” art.

Until now the work from both artists in the thirties and forties
has remained fairly unknown and the little collection presented
in this catalogue is aimed at changing this a little bit. It is not a
complete survey by far. Toyen’s book design production has
been documented by Petr Ladman and his bibliography, recently
reprinted in the book “Knihy s Toyen” (Praha 2003), counts as
many as 570 entries, of which 373 published between 1925
and 1940. Štyrský’s work in book design has as yet not been
documented, but the 45 titles described in this catalogue are
certainly just a small part of his production. Also, many book
covers without signature are attributed to Toyen or Štyrský,
but I doubt if we will ever know for sure. And to make things
even more complicated: finding these books, after a world war
and 40 years of communism, in good condition, with their dust
jackets or in original wrappers, is getting more and more
difficult.

Jindøich Toman’s article in ‘Umìní’ vol. XLVIII, no. 3 (Praha,

2000): ‘The dream factory had a horror division’, is to my
knowledge the best article so far published on these books and
the quote above is taken from that article, as well as the
translation of the quote by Teige, printed at page 3 of this
catalogue. The article brought this ‘forgotten’ part of Štyrský’s
and Toyen’s book art to my attention and I hope it will do the
same for the reader of this catalogue.
