Bibliography:
Toman, Jindrich. The dream factory had a horror division: Štyrský’s and Toyen’s psycho-covers from
the 1930s. (In: Umení. Journal of the Institute for Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the
Czech Republic, vol. XLVIII, no. 3, Praha 2000, pp.170-180).
Ladman, Petr. Soupis knizního díla Toyen. (List of books by Toyen). (In: Bydzovska, Lenka & Karel
Srp. Knihy s Toyen. Praha, Akropolis, 2003, pp. 98-118).
Until now the work from both artists in the thirties and forties
has remained fairly unknown and the little collection presented
in this catalogue is aimed at changing this a little bit. It is not a
complete survey by far. Toyen’s book design production has
been documented by Petr Ladman and his bibliography, recently
reprinted in the book “Knihy s Toyen” (Praha 2003), counts as
many as 570 entries, of which 373 published between 1925
and 1940. Štyrský’s work in book design has as yet not been
documented, but the 45 titles described in this catalogue are
certainly just a small part of his production. Also, many book
covers without signature are attributed to Toyen or Štyrský,
but I doubt if we will ever know for sure. And to make things
even more complicated: finding these books, after a world war
and 40 years of communism, in good condition, with their dust
jackets or in original wrappers, is getting more and more
difficult.
