Eapp Position Paper

This position paper discusses why parents should monitor their children's internet use. It notes that while the internet provides access to information, it can also expose children to inappropriate or dangerous content like cyberbullying, pornography, or contact from criminals. If unmonitored, children may spend excessive time online instead of being productive or could accidentally download viruses. The best way to protect children is for parents to communicate openly with them about internet safety and what they do online through trust and understanding.

POSITION PAPER: WHY SHOULD PARENTS MONITOR THEIR

CHILDREN’S MANIPULATION ON THE INTERTERNET?

RONI PAUL M. PARAN

-SEPTEMBER 2019
I. Introduction
Did you know that the 21st Century marked the information age in human

history which characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry that the

Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization, to an economy based on

information technology? For you to be able to access on the internet, it requires

interaction with a computer or any devices that uses internet which might be

harmful to us humans if it is used frequently. The most controversial result is linked

to ragged sleeping hours and shorter span of sleeping, visually challenged and

obesity. The youths are exposed to gadgets very early especially the internet and

some of it might not be appropriate for your child, it depends on their maturity level.

Monitoring your child’s use of internet is essential since at their young age, they

don’t know the difference between right and wrong. It might be too harsh for the

kid to track their maneuver on the internet without him or her knowing owing to the

fact that everyone has a right to privacy, but it is obligatory for the parents to talk

to their child about the usage of the internet.

As my parents told me that when we children grow and spend more time at

school, our parents are frequently afraid to what might happen to us because “you

are not matured enough to distinguish the good and bad especially if you will fall

into bad alliance. If something like that happens, there might be a possibility that

some of your friends could be trying to convince you to undertake something that

are against family moral code”. Said by my mother. If the child grows old, the less

they talk to his or her parents about what is happening to his or her life, friends and

something that is valuable to them. With the development of the technologies,

harassment can dwell on whether done using technology or in person. To be

specific, usage of internet might also lead to cyber bullying which results to have

lower self-esteem. With people sharing information on the Internet, stalkers may

experience less difficulty finding personal information about others through various

means. Here are the three major problem if the parents tend to ignore their

children’s internet activities. First, hidden places on the Internet and the deep web

can also be a place for criminals to conduct business without as much fear of being

caught. A global audience also gives criminals more ways to solicit their goods.

Teens nowadays are very curious in such many ways. They could possibly access

to the hidden places on the internet and download something that might use the

hacker to be able to stalk the kid which is called the malware or virus. Second, in

our digital age, there is a nearly an infinite amount of content on the Internet. While

there are amazing resources, such as Wikipedia, less desirable content also

exists. Lastly, consequently, users can accidentally come across violent or

pornographic images that they may not want to view. Surfing and playing games
on the Internet can quickly become very addictive. Doing so can lead to spending

a lot of senseless time on the Internet, instead of doing something productive. On

this same note, the Internet can hamper workplace productivity as well. In addition,

Glamour’s on the Internet are distracting students from career goals. Children

usually get attracted to passive income and use various methods to earn income

online and at the end of the day, they are not getting what they expected. Many

passive incomes models are commission based, it means the first party is earning

most of the profits from business or websites, and the 2nd party such as blogger

or content writer only depends on these first parties for the success in life and

career. Most of the youth get inspired by other people’s real, fake or self-

proclaimed popularity, richness without analyzing the skill level and environment.

Students in developing countries think they can do it, without understanding that

they need practical skills.

Child’s exposure to the internet can pose danger to them. With the

fact, it can trigger the curiosity and open the doors of wonder for them. The best

understructure for protecting against the internet threats is to communicate with

them fulfilled with trust and understanding and educate them so that they are

amenable to talk about what is going on in their life. "Obscuring what you do from

your parents is as old parenthood itself." Said by Professor Axel Bruns.
