Catcalling Isn’t a Compliment

Awareness of sexual harassment in various forms continues to increase. However,

literature on street harassment, such as 'Catcalling', is less explored. Catcalling is a greeting

uttered by a man to a woman he does not know, it can be a form of temptation or a call. Men

assume that this is just a fad and praise, not sexual harassment, even though women who

experience it feel uncomfortable.

So, why is the catcalling still happening? For some people, especially men consider it

as a compliment, even though catcalling is not a compliment. In an effort to determine the

relationship between catcalling and praise, research and report on the results of a survey

designed to collect recipient views with regard to catcalling and praise, and survey results reveal

ambiguities similar to those reported, but major differences also emerge. The results show that

catcalling is the worst compliment, and a dangerous reminder of women's worst inequality that

can frighten and disturb women.

Not only is it frightening and disturbing, catcalling can also have a negative

psychological impact on women which includes constant feelings of insecurity, loss of self-

esteem, limited participation in daily life activities in public places. Women also tend to blame

themselves for catcalling that happened to her.

With so many adverse effects that may be obtained by the victim, the perpetrators of

catcalling must be firmly enforced and carried out precautions before catcalling on the victim.
For example, in recent years, more and more activists, bloggers, and online media outlets have

published articles about street harassment, reflecting a growing and international social anti-

harassment movement.

Catcalling is not a compliment and a trivial thing that we can ignore, if it is constantly

ignored, the possibility of perpetrators continue to do it or even do worse things and women will

not feel safe just to do daily activities. We must continue to uphold justice and prosperity for

women, therefore we as caring people must contribute to its enforcement and prevention.
