silver fulminate
Posted onApril 12, 2015byxploadm
This synthesis is based on the partial nitrification / oxidation of ethanol and the subsequent
precipitation of the silver salt
Watch out! Silver fulminate is devilishly unstable. This explosive should never be actively
used

8ml nitric acid 70%
15ml ethanol 95%
1gr silver
manual
1) Add 8ml nitric acid to a beaker and heat to 35 ° C.
2) Once this temperature is reached, the silver powder is added
3) There are relatively many nitrous gases which are wanted; The dissolved Nox will
subsequently start the oxidation of the ethanol
Be sure to wear protective gear
3) Once the silver is completely dissolved, 15 ml of ethanol are added, whereby the solution
decolorizes immediately
4) The oxidation starts within seconds which becomes visible on the soon emerging small
bubbles.
From now on you should definitely work in the fume hood or in the open air as the
resulting gases / vapors are extremely toxic
Beginning reaction
1) Within one minute, the mixture warms up to 70 ° C, the reaction now starts properly.
The temperature should be maintained at 80 ° C for the next 25 minutes
2) After about 10 minutes, the reaction weakens and the temperature drops to 60 ° C
3) Once the 35 minutes are over, pour the mixture very carefully into 200ml of water whereupon
the silver fulminate should precipitate.
4) Now you filter the product
5) Once everything has gone through, take the filter with thick protective gloves and spread it out
to dry
