PROJECT SYNOPSIS
AUTOMATIC STAIR CLIMBING TROLLEY
The Product/Service/Idea:
Lifting heavy objects to upper stories or to upper levels from the ground is
very painful job, especially where there are no lifting facilities (elevators,
conveyer, etc). Moreover, most of the buildings are structurally congested
and do not have elevators or escalators. This project can introduce a new
option for transportation of loads over the stairs.
Technology behind the project:
Modern Stairlifts now use Rack & Pinion drive systems, there has been many
different ways and approaches to drive / move the stairlift carriage up and
down the track! From wire rope driven winch drums to chain driven
mechanisms. All are now obsolete apart from the Rack & Pinion system
The rack is wrapped with non-slipping crawler tracks, 98% of stairlift
manufactures use Aluminum in their track designs. The stairlift motor
connected to the stairlift gearbox (Pinion) drives the pinion along the
rack/track. Rack & Pinion drives produce a very smooth stairlift ride, hence
all stairlift manufactures adopting the Rack & Pinion drive system in their
stairlift designs and production.
Possible innovation at later stage:
Most stairlifts use x 2 SLA (Sealed Lead Acid Batteries) located within the
carriage. SLA batteries are standard batteries found in many applications
and easy to source. Stairlift manufacturers are now producing specialised
battery packs to reduce weight and make the stairlifts more slimmer in
design. Downside to this, If and when you require new batteries you will only
be able to source them through the manufacturer.
Also at later stages, we can make it foldable also so that handling or carrying
of the trolley will be much easier for the user or operator.
Scalability:
Currently it is being produced in small scale and according to the needs and
demands of the customer. Since it is mainly used by industries and
companies for loading and unloading of luggage from different floors as per
their need.
Currently it’s market is growing in other countries rapidly, but no such
competitors are there in india for it due to which we have to import it from
other countries and pay the custom charges and taxes for that.
How the idea is different from existing solution:
Almost every stair climbing trolley projects in india are manually
operated and none of them are automated.
The mechanism of automatic stair climbing trolley is different from the
tri-star wheel trolley (manually operated) and also can be controlled as
per the need of the user.
Also the idea of this project is very innovative and no such project is
being made till now in our market.
It is quite smooth, noiseless, efficient, easy to handle whereas the
previous model which is manually operated, lacks these qualities which
are mentioned above.
What problem is the idea trying to solve:
You are no longer restricted by the height of the steps, since it can go
up irregular steps in such a way to insure contact with a large number
of stair edges or surfaces.
The trolley can ascend and descend over the stairs automatically while
carrying the luggage, as per the customer needs.
Scope of commercialization:
It is beneficiary in urban areas due to which rate of production and growth of
industries will be increased and also in domestic and household purposes it
can be used, if launched at a cheaper price in the market.

Associate Professor at SKIT, Jaipur (ME department).
THE SUPPORT SYSTEM – Our institution is capable of supporting the
team in project. Our workshop contains all basic at essentials for
developing a prototype of project.
Also our institution provides us sufficient space, time, resources, etc for
developing the project in our campus also.
The mentors and the staff of the department is highly cooperative and
helping which encourages the student to efficiently work on the project.
