Matthew Odom Orange County Sheriff 9/10/19
My dream job is to be a Deputy for the Orange County Sheriff’s department. I would start off as
a Deputy Sheriff Trainee. I will be required to attend a paid 26-week P.O.S.T. certified Sheriffs training
academy. In addition, a 2-week training academy. As a trainee I will develop the skill required for entry
into a law enforcement as a Deputy. Trainees will be trained in the California criminal and civil Law as
well as the policies and procedures of the department. After satisfactory evaluation, graduation from
the academy and academy staff recommendations, trainees will be promoted to a Deputy Sheriff. The
trainees the become certified sworn peace officers for the state of California and Orange County. Must
have a U.S. high school diploma, general education development credential, California high school
proficiency certification, or attained a two year or four-year degree from a college or university that is
U.S. accredited.
I think a high school diploma is all that is required because when you get hired you go to their
academy and they teach you what they want you to know and how to do it. My currently classes and
major will help me in my path for my dream job. By having a college degree, I will be more valuable
compared to someone that doesn’t. Having a college degree will start me off at a higher pay and will be
eligible for promotions and raises.
As a Deputy Sheriff Trainee in the academy the hourly pay is $31.96/ hour and $66,476.80
annually.
