How would you evaluate drivers' efficiency?
How would you evaluate channels for attracting supply
and demand? How would you start from scratch in new city? How would you convince partners to join
Uber? how would you estimate perfomance bonus for partners? Within a week we had a drop in supply
from 8000 to 7500, how many drivers we need to train now to get back to 8000 supply (this is sort of
estimation case where you need to get some data from the interviewer)? The last one was about
modeling driver's income, the interviewer created google spreadsheet to watch your modeling process
real time, so you will need to make some underlying assumptions for that: you need to google Uber
fares for the city you apply in (base fare, time, length), then assume average ride time and length for
that city, average number of rides, cost of car, gas consumption and cost, insurance, expect that an
interviewer will challenge your assumption on the way.
t depends on what kind of managerial role you are interviewing for and your region. Uber now
has a number of different tests it uses for different purposes. 'Creative' and other tests are not the
topic of this question so I'll try to explain the 'analytics' tests, albeit briefly.
Uber's analytics test can be divided into 4 types:
- 32 questions analytics test
- 20 questions analytics test.
- 10 questions / 30 mins analytics test (used in the 'expedited interview' - more info below)
- 'Growth Analytics Challenge' test
32 Questions Analytics Test:
This test is required for the candidates applying to the Community Manager/Associate,
Community Support Representative, Operations Manager, General Manager, Operations and
Logistics Manager, Expansion Manager, Demand Manager, City Coordinator, Launcher and
similar roles both for Uber Ridesharing and the UberEATS service.
This test is done online via a link that will be sent to you from the recruiter. You need to
complete the test in one setting and max in 2 hours. You have the option to return back to your
answers and change them during the test. The test is roughly divided into 4 different sections:
Section 1: Download a csv file and answer excel & pivot table analysis questions regarding that
file. This is mostly fast & efficient number crunching. Around 10 questions.
Section 2: Download another excel (csv) file and answer related questions. This is mostly related
to promotional scenarios and number analysis. Around 8 questions.
Section 3: You are given operational questions/situations (not related with the excel files) and
find the right answer. Around 10 questions.
Section 4: Open ended essay type of questions. There are 4 questions here, some are '4 sentences
or less', some are 'write a three paragraph email' questions. Type of questions and expected
answers change according to your role and service (UberEATS vs Uber Ridesharing)
The recruiter will tell you that you need to score at least 70 to advance to the next stage, but I've
seen that some people who think they did not answer the the math section properly (missed 3-4
questions) make it to the next round when they answered the essay questions well. (So properly
answering essay questions is important).
As mentioned in the other answers, you need to be fast and efficient in addition to being
proficient in excel to be able to answer all the questions properly in 2 hours. You also need to
figure out how to open the csv files in a properly workable format since they are formatted
weirdly on purpose - that can make a big difference.
20 Questions Analytics Test:
This is a variation of the 32 questions standart test (a subset). This test has 13 math-analytical
questions and 7 open ended essay type of questions. For this test, you get 1 CSV file (the first csv
file of the 2 given in the standart 32 questions test). This test is reportedly given to candidates
mainly in India and China recently(as of September 2015).
10 Questions / 30 Mins Analytics Test:
This is again a variation of the 32 questions test: It is required for the same type of roles I
mentioned in the '32 questions test' above. The difference is the content and who gets it: When
Uber is in a hurry to recruit people for a given region / city, the Uber HR guys find and reach out
to many potentially good candidates around the area from LinkedIn directly and ask them if they
want to interview for Uber. If the LinkedIn contact says yes, then they are given this 10
questions / 30 minutes quiz. If they pass the quiz, they are invited to a happy-hour meeting with
the team for a final decision.
This test is again done online. You see all of the questions in a single page so you have the
option to change your answers to already answered questions during the test. You DO NOT
download an excel/csv file for this test.
This test is composed of probability / permutation / math skills questions. (E.g. permutations of
people sitting around a round table, number of different combinations of car plate numbers, etc.)
The questions are not extremely hard but this test, I would say, is more stressfull than the 32
questions one due to the very short time given to complete it - 30 mins.
Growth Analytics Challenge Test
This test is required for the Business Systems Analyst, CRM Marketing Manager, Email
Marketing Developer/Manager, Growth Manager, Growth Marketing Lead, Performance
Marketing Expert roles.
It is composed of 3 sections:
1. SQL (write an sql given the database schema)
2. Experiment and Metrics Design (cpm, cpc marketing design, analysis)
3. Data Analysis (rider retension, cohort)
This test is obvioulsy geared more towards deep-data analysis and is more technical - something
that is normally required from an analyst.
Hope this info helps.
Disclaimer: I am an ex Google employee and now a member of a digital publishing group. My
publishing group runs a website that sells an interview prep guide for Uber. We have been in
talks with many candidates/real test takers for months now - thus have very detailed info about
the test. Even if you don't buy the interview prep guide from it, the website has more detailed
info about the test:
