Position Paper

The document is a position paper arguing that tree cutting for road widening projects should be restricted due to environmental threats. It notes that while improving infrastructure is important, road widening results in thousands of trees being cut, including century-old trees, without sufficient consideration of environmental impacts. This tree cutting undermines soil stability and increases risks of landslides and flooding. While modernization is important, it shouldn't compromise protecting nature and the environment for future generations. The paper calls on the DPWH and DENR to review tree cutting policies for road projects and implement genuine public consultation and assessment of environmental impacts.

PRESERVATION V.S. MODERNIZATION

The cutting down of trees due to road widening must be restricted because of the threats
that contributes to our environment.

Road widening is a big help to improve local infrastructure and contribute to the continued
growth of the City is good but also it has bad effect because road widening is a caused of
chopping of some century year old trees. Our government thinks that road widening is practical
solution of having many vehicles because now a days the number of rating of vehicles is now
increasing. 11.6 million was resgistered by the LTO and it continues growing. Our government
decided to cut down trees and they also think that it is a best solution to achieve a progressive
City or country. On the other hand the didn’t think the safety of the people and the bad effect
of cutting those trees. Trees are the most beautiful creatures in nature and needed to be save
and it is our primary responsibility to save it as a human being. Human beeing cut tees because
of different reasons but as we cut down trees we should also understand the importance of
it.Trees should be save as they provide foods to live and it is a sinks of carbon dioxide, a green
house gas , and the producers of oxygen without which life on earth can’t sustain. In cutting
trees for road widening has a advantage and disadvantage . It’s advantage is the widening of the
road to have a big way ot space for the big vehicles and its disavantage is the distraction of our
nature , the lost of trees and possibilities of experiencing different kins of calamities like flood,
soil erosion and lang slides.. People should make this environment a better place for living and
for the betterment of the next generations.

We call on the DPWH and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to
stop all tree-cutting activities for road widening projects until a review of this policy is
undertaken. This review should provide a mechanism for genuine public consultation and a
detailed scientific assessment the cutting of trees may have on the environment, especially with
climate change and harder-hitting climate-related natural disasters. What’s happening to the
Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources? (CHANGE.ORG ,2014)

In every year, thousand of our trees have been cut by the Department of Public Works and
Highways (DPWH), then supported by these Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR). As the year goes by maybe the other century year old trees have a same fate of the
trees being cut. Like the trees from Molave, Zamboanga Del Sur, that the trees on the said
location will be chop because for the road widening, and this place may will became a high
urbanized city. High urbanized city showing the modernization such these already leads the
transformation of our place, where in we supposedly see a beautiful scenery of trees,
mountains, and flowers, then as the modernization era comes we all can see are the high
buildings the skyscrapers, the big posts, city lights at night, and also some traffic lights. I think
people, nowadays didn’t think about the tomorrow of our mother earth. We students as long
as we have the knowledge of protecting our beloved mother earth we should allowed our voice
to be hear by the many. Trees shouldn’t cut and chopped it should be keep, because we don’t
know, someday we will going to some museums to see a trees and this how life is complicated.

The country is the fifth in the number of plant species and maintains five percent of the
world’s flora. It also ranks fourth in bird endemism (DENR, 2009). Records show that endemism
is particularly high for amphibians (85.4 percent), reptiles (67.5 percent) and plants (65.8
percent) (Conservation International [CI] Philippines, 2007a). In addition,Philippines has become
one of 34 global biodiversity hotspots. Each hotspot is an identified area or country that has
high rates of biodiversity but faces extreme threats and has already lost at least 70 percent of its
original natural vegetation (CI-Philippines, 2007a). (ZARIYAH, 2016)

We can say it is great to have a progressive city or country , but think of it does cutting
these trees make our city or country makes it progressive? Is that how we Filipino value our
nature? I think that’s why the Philippines is still a developing country for how many years,
because of valuing things that such a mess. Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) are the one who gives permit, then are these officials already forgetten that they should
protect our environment?

The cutting down of trees due to road widening must be restricted because of the
threats that contributes to our environment. Thousands of trees all over the Philippines, many of
them century-old, have been cut for road widening and infrastructure development projects of
the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Many more trees face the same fate. In
several cases, road widening was deemed unnecessary. (CHANGE.ORG, 2014)

The intention to push for road-widening projects to help improve local infrastructure
and contribute to the continued growth of the city is good, but when done haphazardly, can be
dangerous. Road widening causes the ground to shift, making the soil unstable and prone to
landslide. Roadside trees whose roots hold soil together are also felled during road widening
operations, compromising the stability of the earth underneath the pavement. (SUBIDO,2018).
DPWH and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) should to be called to
stop all tree-cutting activities for road widening projects. Therefore, we oblige our fellow
Filipinos that we should hand in hand of stoping cutting trees. DENR and DPWH should awake
that the decision they made up is not good after all. Molave, Zamboanga Del Sur must be save
by this contendment.
The cutting down of trees due to road widening must be end. It is a threat to the lives of
people and to the life of earth. We can only hope that these widened roads become lined with
trees once again. Let’s save our trees to Save the future of our next generation.
