Childhood and adolescence
Downey was born in Manhattan (New York), as the younger of two brothers. His
father, Robert Downey Sr., is an actor, writer, producer, director of photography
and film director; and his mother, Elsie - whose maiden name was Ford - was also
an actress and appeared in Downey movies Sr.2 His father is of Judeolituan,
Judeo-Hungarian and Irish descent, while his mother was of Scottish, German and
Swiss ancestry .3 4 5 His father was born under the name of "Robert Elias", but
changed his last name to "Downey" - after the death of his stepfather James
Downey - when he was still a minor and wanted to enlist in the army. He and his
older sister, Allyson, grew up in Greenwich Village. When his parents separated in
1976, he and his 18-month-old sister, Allison, went to live in Santa Monica
(California), with their father. He spent his childhood moving between New York,
Los Angeles and England. As a child, Downey was "surrounded by drugs." His
father, a drug addict, allowed Downey to use marijuana cigarettes at age eight;
Many years later his father said he regretted it. Downey stated that drug use
created an emotional bond between him and his father: "When my father and I
used drugs together, it was as if he tried to express his love for me in the only way
he knew." Over time, Downey began spending the night drinking alcohol and
"making thousands of calls to get drugs." During his childhood Downey had minor
roles in his father's projects. He debuted as an actor at the age of five, playing a
sick puppy in the absurd comedy Pound in 1970, and then at age seven he
appeared in the surreal Greaser's Palace (1972). At the age of ten he lived in
England and studied classical ballet, as part of a broader curriculum. In his teens
he attended the Stage door Manor performing arts training center in northern New
York State. When his parents divorced in 1978, Downey moved to California with
his father, but in 1982 he left Santa Monica High School and returned to New York
to try to be a full-time actor. He had four companions, including a young man
named Kiefer Sutherland, when he moved to Hollywood to pursue his acting
career.
Career
In 1970, with five years, he participated in the film Pound, directed by his father
and in which he worked with his sister as an extra. Between 1970 and 1980 he
continued making small appearances in the films directed by his father. It was in
1982, at seventeen, when Downey decided to drop out of high school and return to
New York to start his acting career. Like all the actors in the beginning, he had to
perform small jobs to survive, as a waiter or in a shoe store, which alternated with
small theater productions.
In 1983 he received his first Hollywood opportunity: Baby It's you. This was
followed by Weird Science, The Firstborn and Back to School. Two years later, and
thanks to those performances, he arrived at the long Saturday Night Live (SNL),
where he participated in eighteen episodes with several characters. It was because
of his performance in the show, that director James Toback showed interest in
Downey and called him for his first starring role in The Pick-Up Artist. Throughout
the 1980s he acted in such diverse films, as directed by his father Rented Lips,
1969 with Kiefer Sutherland, Just before the law with James Woods or Chances
Are co-starring with Cybil Shepherd.
In 1990, consolidated as one of the young Hollywood stars of the moment -
included in what became known as the Brat Pack -, he met Mel Gibson for Air
America. A year later he performed at Soapdish, where he shared credits witSally
Field, Kevin Kline and Whoopi Goldberg.
