The story is about a monkey and a turtle who divide banana trunks they found by a river. When the bananas ripen, the monkey refuses to help the turtle get its fruit. In retaliation, the turtle tricks the monkey into jumping into sharp bamboo that kills it. The turtle then sells the monkey's blood to the king. Feeling deceived, the king orders the turtle's execution but it saves itself by withdrawing into its shell, causing the king's death instead. The resolution shows we must live harmoniously and not cheat or be unjust leaders.
