HOW DOES THE SOCCER WORLD CUP WORK?
This sporting event is held every four years since 1930. It
has two main stages: a qualifying process in which nearly
200 national teams are currently participating and a final
phase held every four years at a defined venue in
advance in which they participate 32 teams (48 from the
2026 edition) for a period close to one month.
As the tournament progresses, fewer and fewer teams
remain.
From the original 32 teams, 16 teams advance. The final 8
play in the quarterfinals and determine teams for
semifinals las 4 teams. The final round of the tournament
determines the champion.
During the tournament, players aim to score goals. But
not every game ends with a clear win.
A tie game, or draw, may result. Penalties, like red cards
and yellow cards, help determine which team moves
forward in these cases.
17 countries have hosted the World Cup. Brazil, France,
Italy, Germany and Mexico have each hosted twice, while
Uruguay, Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, England, Argentina,
Spain, the United States, Japan and South Korea (jointly),
South Africa and Russia have each hosted once. Qatar
are planned as hosts of the 2022 finals, and 2026 will be
jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico,
which will give Mexico the distinction of being the first
country to have hosted games in three finals.
