4C’S OF EDUCATION
Background
With the host of challenges facing today’s communities and the changes in workforce expertise, 21st century skills are
needed to be taught to students for them to be prepared for their lives after graduation. In 2002, the first framework for
21st century skill was developed, but it was deemed to be too long and complicated. Thus, educators simplified the
framework by determining the most important 21st century skills for K-12 Education – Critical Thinking, Creativity,
Collaboration, and Communication.
Critical Thinking
     - Students in this generation must hone their skills in analysis, interpretation, problem solving, and reasoning over
just content knowledge in order to face the challenges of the real world.
Ways to integrate the Critical Thinking in your classroom
         1. Research paper, Reaction/Reflection Paper etc.
         2. Investigatory project aiming to solve a certain problem
Creativity
   - Creativity is about utilizing your imagination and assisting others to use their imagination. “Creativity may be
defined as pushing the boundaries to develop new ideas, and innovation is the development of these ideas into
        actuality.” (McGoldrick 2002; Tait 2002).
Ways to integrate the Creativity in your classroom
        1. Students create poems basing on social issues.
        2. Role play/Simulation on real life situations
Collaboration
    - Students should develop the ability to work with others to maximize their potential and make better
outputs/results. “Under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than
the smartest people in them.”( Surowiecki, 2004)
Ways to integrate the Collaboration in your classroom
       1. Literary Circle
       2. Brainstorming/Group Activities
Communication
   - Expressing thoughts clearly to motivate others. Communicating clearly in a collaborative context is more
      important today.
Ways to integrate the Communication in your classroom
      1. Use different tools and media platforms such as Google Docs., Book clubs, ESL Connect, twitter, You Tube
          videos, etc.
      2. In Literature, students may use the app TeleStory to explain an author’s purpose in writing a book.
