Teacher I
Being a Values Education Teacher is a big challenge for me. From time
to time you have to say good things and take careful actions for everyone and
most especially for the students to imitate.
Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP) as a learning area is very crucial that
needs thoughtful sharing among students. This is not as easy as Math
problems that need to be solved, but rather a compilation of good words, right
deeds and moral thinking.
The subject encompasses the holistic well-being of a person. It teaches
the value of life and morality which somehow helped mold my well-being as a
teacher. This is a big challenge for me because I need to fix first everything
about myself to effectively inculcate to the mind of the students those values.
As they say, “only enlightened beings can teach values, not ordinary mortals.”
During the first meeting in teaching the subject, I see to it that I
establish rapport with my students. There is a need to gain their trust since
the subject needs to speak of their “experience.” They are encouraged to feel
“what it’s like” to act out, or live by, the value being recommended. Teaching
strategies should be more engaging and experiential such as drama, role
playing and simulations to awaken their empathy.
EsP is more of knowing and meditating about the students’ own self –
knowing themselves better, their talents, skills and values. As a teacher, I am
responsible for motivating the students. No matter how “hard-headed” or
problematic the students are, I need to get hold of my words and talk to them
in a calm manner. Trusting, appreciating and believing in their abilities will
greatly help the students to grow and thrive further in life.
