This document summarizes an article about the social impacts of computers. It discusses three case studies: 1) how the military drove computer development after WWII through projects like SAGE; 2) the "productivity puzzle" around increased computerization in banking; and 3) gender imbalances in computer use and education. The author argues that social factors and artifacts influence each other reciprocally. While the military significantly advanced computers, social influences also shaped technological development. The summary examines how these cases illustrate that understanding the interaction between technology and society requires considering them as mutually determining.

Summary of “Impact” to Social Process: Computers in Society and Culture

The author of this article investigates on social effects of digital computers and

how some of social influences that improves their growth. The chapter centralizes on three cases

like in the post-World War II era military relations with computing, the “productivity puzzle” of

computerization in bank.ng, and the relationship of gender identity to computer use. Overall this

article has two important objectives: firstly it essays a point of entry into huge written work on

computers and society. More important and secondly, it present a historical and social study that

consider computers not as a triggers but as a result of social movement. Social effects and

artifacts manufactured in practice take place in knit cycle. Here it illustrates that how the three

cases portrays the complete result that should demonstrates the difficulty of this interaction.

This chapter present study about Computers and the Military after WWII and

Project Whirlwind and the SAGE air defense system, then about Computers and Work: Banking

and the “Productivity Puzzle”, and then Genders and Computers, Sexism in educational settings,

and Cultural construction and gendered tools. Here by investigating the historical period the

author demonstrates how military requirements and primary issue helps in computer

development to improve growth in military. It was spread throughout that military has impact on

computer technology but have often been the result of indirect types of interference which go

unnoticed in traditional historical assessment. Then Project Whirlwind is about technologies and

organizational foundation which became SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment system).

It was developed during WWII by NAVY and created at MIT. Whirlwind used for pilot training,

using computers to simulate any type of aircraft and connect it to a cockpit mock-up. Project

leader Jay Forrester shifted Whirlwind from an analog to a digital system. SAGE technology had
significant effects on military doctrine and organizational structure. IBM also used SAGE

technology to create the first computerized, centralized airline booking scheme in the Semi-

Automatic Business Research Environment (SABRE).

This chapter seeks to balance the perspective with the concept of a "computer

internet," in which computers are only one of a multitude of social and technical variables

influencing organizational effectiveness and culture. There are drastic trends in computing

energy expansion and cost reduction per calculation. According to article Martin Baily

mentioned that we are creating better computer but we actually do not know how to use them

yet. This is called ‘production puzzle” (Baily 1991, p. 112). Then the chapter focuses on gender

and computer where there is gender imbalance in computer profession and also here it also

follows same ways in education department. It also illustrates sexism in education as women are

harassed and defame for the work. Then it explains about cultural construction and gendered

tools. This part explains that cultural factors involves in social process and computer

technology.

Conclusion: All the three case study enhance that communication of technology reinforce with

politics, society, and culture to society. Finally, computer influence society through interactive

process of social construction.
