Introduction:

Good teaching is directing the teaching learning process so that changes of a

relatively permanent nature are brought about in the learners as a result of the
instruction. The best way to measure the effectiveness of teaching is to base it on
how well instructors are able to advance the academically challenged students to
higher academic performance.

In other words, we should not judge the effectiveness of their teaching based on
how well the smart students perform as they would perform well even without
instructors help.

Not all faculty members are equipped with the right skillset to achieve the above
mentioned effectiveness. Hence investing time and effort in their training is
necessary. However, there aren’t many methods in evaluating their performance as
there are evaluating the performance of the students. Developing strategies for
implementing training programs based on specific needs requires the commitment
of all members of the college community.

In a teaching and learning community, the most effective evaluation is that which
encourages and rewards effective teaching practices on the basis of student
learning outcomes (Doherty et al., 2002; Shapiro and Levine, 1999).

Need:

1) How to teach: Delivering a lesson requires both the application of art and
science blended perfectly to make it easily accessible to the students
understanding.
2) How to learn: One can only be able to teach a given topic effectively when
one holds a sound knowledge and proficiencies over the content. And for
that one should know how to learn on that topic first prior to deliver it on the
classroom.
3) What to teach: Subject matter is very essential in the context of teaching,
and therefore one should know and plan well before executing a lesson in
the classroom on what exactly to teach to the students. There is a particular
methodology on this and this could be learned only through a professional
teacher training course.
4) Procedure to design instructions: To design instructional notes one should
focus on various essential facets like designing and scheduling of proper
lesson plans, preparing a sound enrichment activities, chalking out
evaluation parameters and many more.
5) Classroom management: Managing a classroom requires high level of
concentration, self-application, patience, hands-on expertise and required
experience. Because, it is like navigating through the hazards of diverse
culture, demography coupled with mostly disinterested and hostile pupil.
Classroom management can also be put under a distinct discipline of studies
as it is composed of clustered elements of psychology, imparting discipline,
counseling, drill on self-confidence and many other delicate arts.
6) Counseling and advocating students: In a fast paced world where lives of
students are being brought under the microscope of evaluation every now
and their space for breathing life is getting narrower by the day, counseling
and advocating student and regaining their faith is one very essential
component of teaching which can never be learned without a professional
guidance.
7) Self-counseling: Profession as a teacher can sometimes be very toiling upon
oneself in respect of the continuous societal judgment and the challenges
they face at the workplace every day. With the accountability of student’s
intellectual development, teachers are also responsible for their overall
development as well. Therefore it is very indispensable for the teachers to
learn and know how to counsel themselves of their own to keep themselves
up for the task both mentally and physically.
8) Acquire necessary funding: Much like counseling students and parents,
teachers also need to be constantly active in grabbing a chance to acquire the
necessary funding for the development of their subject learning such as lab
equipment.
9) Motivate and inspire learners: Teachers are the builders of a nation, they
nurture the budding talents and shape them up into those pillars upon which
the entire nation depends and progress thereafter. Therefore teachers should
learn to motivate and inspire the learners so that they gain the essential
knowledge effectively in order to put them up in practical use and help the
nation grow further.

Pre-requisites:

● Funds from Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP)

● Software Trainers
● British Council Officials (Social)
● NPTEL Officials (Academic Resources)

Execution:

The training for teachers will span across a month with sessions conducted on
Saturdays and Sundays

The training is done in two categories which are the most important factors
considered as per recent feedback received from students handled by themselves.
They are:

1) Academic excellence training

2) Social skills training

The training is handled by professionals in both the categories. For example

organisations like British Council holds professional development for teachers.
For the academic excellence category, professors from the top 10 institutions of
eminence can conduct classes, even remotely.
It is compulsory that the job training must include gradual improvement of both of
these aspects. Throughout the course of training, faculties will be exercised and
evaluated to see the effectiveness of the methods employed and to improve their
abilities related to both these aspects.

1) Academic excellence training:

The faculties will be directed to knowledge through books and electronic resources
through which they will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced topics and about the
various new innovations that has come up in their respective fields. The use of
electronic sources like links, videos, e-books enable the faculty to remotely access
these resources. These resources will be provided to the faculty on Mondays every
week and they are given time till the upcoming Saturday to thoroughly understand
the material.

The faculties are then expected to write a written test at the end of the week on
Saturday. In the afternoon session lab classes will be held, where the trainers will
demonstrate advanced softwares (subject-related) to the faculty.

2) Social skills training:

On Sunday, there will be an interactive session in the Barn Hall and programs
including brain-teaser games and elocutions will be conducted. This will be
followed by class room lectures focused on improving social attributes such as –
patience, empathy, passion, punctuality and student friendliness. There will also be
video tutorials of various case studies, situational tasks and proper classroom
interactions.
Evaluation:

1) Faculty feedback – A basic questionnaire survey on how the teachers

received the training, was it effective to themselves and any improvements
to be made
2) Trainers evaluation – Teachers will be asked to take a class for students
under the trainers observation. Also the trainers will ask questions on
advanced topics which they by now supposedly have learnt and also check
their student-interactive abilities.
3) Students feedback – Feedback of students attending a particular faculty’s
classes before and after the training program. This feedback will ask them to
evaluate various factors from 1 to 10, which will be weighed by the surveyor
and averaged, giving an idea of the improvement. The initial feedback will
be collected a week before the training program begins. The post-training
feedback will be collected 2-3 weeks after the training, giving students time
to evaluate the faculty.
4) Overall trainer’s response on whether teachers were cooperative and
whether they enjoyed training them. This gives the college administration an
idea of how effective the training was and how satisfied the trainers are.
