Phonics: Dini, Allyssa, Khairun, Luqman

This document discusses different methods of phonics instruction for teaching children to read. It describes five main types: synthetic phonics, analytic phonics, analogy-based phonics, embedded phonics, and onset-rime phonics. Synthetic phonics teaches individual letter sounds and blending, while analytic phonics focuses on onset and rime patterns. Analogy-based phonics uses familiar word parts to decode new words. Embedded phonics teaches phonics within reading lessons. Onset-rime phonics identifies word onsets and rimes to sound out words.

PHONICS

DINI, ALLYSSA, KHAIRUN, LUQMAN

• A method of teaching reading: children learn the letters of the alphabet and
their sounds first
• Children are taught to blend the sounds phonetically to form words
• Then, they can naturally build vocabulary increase fluency and
comprehension
• Children can begin reading within 3 to 6 months
• There are 5 types of phonics that can be used in teaching reading:
• Synthetic phonics
• Analytic phonics
• Analogy-based phonics
• Embedded phonics
• Onset-Rime phonics instruction
Synthetic Phonics
• The synthetic phonics method begins by teaching children the 40 sounds of the
alphabet as opposed to just the letters of the alphabet.
• Once those sounds are taught, the children learn sound blends and then move
into forming words.
• One of the criticisms of synthetic phonics is that the word lists can make the
reading limited and boring for the child.
• Synthetic phonics can be combined with the whole word, also known as the
sight word method of instruction to move the child into more interesting
reading more quickly.
Analytic Phonics
• Using the analytic phonics method, children analyze letter-sound relationships in
words.
• This method differs from the synthetic method as it does not focus on individual
letters and sound relationships.
• The analytic method focuses on learning the onset, or sounds made before the first
vowel and the rime, or sound that follows. For example, in the word cat, the "c"
sound is the onset and "at" is the rime, forming the word cat.
• The analytic phonics method requires children to be able to say the onset, say the
rime, and then be able to blend the two to form the word.
ANALOGY-BASED PHONICS
• Students use part of words they have already learned to read

• Then, they must decode words they don’t know with familiar words they have
learned

• This strategy applied when two words share similar parts in their spellings

• Students decipher unknown words by looking at the spelling patterns using the
same patterns to read other words
EMBEDDED PHONICS
• Students learn vocabulary through direct instruction on the letter-sound relationships
during the reading of connected speech.

• Going from reading material to word analysis.

• Decoding and encoding develop together.

• Used when students have difficulty reading a particular word.

• However, this method is unsystematic as only the needed phonics elements within the
context of a reading lesson are taught at the time.
Onset-Rime Phonics Instruction
• Teaches children to sound out the word.
• Identify the onset and then sound of the rime and blend it to create the word
