Teacher's Name: Paul James B. Sibal
Subject Area: Mathematics 10
Quarter Number: 1st Quarter
Subject Matter: Pattern and Algebra
Topic/Lesson Name: Arithmetic Sequence and Arithmetic Series
Content Standards: demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sequences,
polynomials and polynomial equations.
Culminating Performance is able to formulate and solve problems involving sequences,
Standard polynomials and polynomial equations in different disciplines
through appropriate and accurate representations.
Performance Tasks: Honeycomb Performance Task
You are an engineer for Plasticore Corporation who makes custom
tables for varying sizes for banquet halls. You have been asked to
design and manufacture round banquet tables with layered of
honeycomb cores. Each honeycomb in the core has a height of
1cm. the size of the honeycomb do not change, as the size of the
tables increases the number of honeycomb layer increases.
Learning Competencies: 1. generates patterns.
2. illustrates an arithmetic sequence
3.determines arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic
sequence.
4. finds the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence
Specific Learning 1. generates patterns.
Outcomes: 2. illustrates an arithmetic sequence
3.determines arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic
sequence.
4. finds the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence
5. solve real life situation involving sequence
Time Allotment: 240 minutes
Lesson Outline:
A. In her first public address, the principal mentioned about the success
Introduction/Review of the recent “Brigada Eskwela.” Because of this success, the
principal challenged the students, especially the Grade 9 and Grade
10 students, to extend the same service to their community by
having a One-Saturday community clean-up which the principal
called “Kilos Kabataan Project.” Volunteers have to sign up until 5
p.m. for the project. Accepting the principal’s challenge, 10 students
immediately signed up for the cleanup.
After 10 minutes, there were already 15 who had signed up. After 10
more minutes, there were 20, then 25, 30, and so on. Amazed by
the students’ response to the challenge, the principal became
confident that the youth could be mobilized to create positive
change. The above scenario illustrates a sequence. In this learning
module, you will know more about sequences, and how the concept
of a sequence is utilized in our daily lives.
B. Motivation Video Presentation of Carl Gauss’s Story and Calendar Card
C. Arithmetic Sequence
Instruction/Delivery Sequence- is a set of consecutive positive integers or a subset of
positive integers. Each integer in a sequence called term. The first
term, a1, the second term a2, and the nth term is an. The nth term is
also called general term.
2 types of sequence:
-finite sequence it has a last term
-infinite sequence it does not have a last term.
To generate sequence, we can use the recursive rule. And to
generate recursive formula from the given sequence we can use
explicit rule
Then, to find the missing term of the arithmetic sequence we can
use this formula an = a1 + (n-1) d,
a1 – first term, d – is the common difference
Arithmetic series
-sum of all term of the sequence.
then, to easy add all values of infinite sequence we can use this
formula Sn = n/2 (a1 + an) or n/2 [ 2a11 + (n-1) d]
where n is the number of term, a1 is the first term, an is the nth term
and d is the common difference.
D. Practice Given the recursive formula, write the first five terms of the
sequence.
1. an = 2n-5
2. an = n2+4n+6
3. an = (n-1) (n+1) n
4. an = n2
5. an = n (n+1)/3n+1
E. Enrichment Write a rule for each sequence as a recursive formula and use it to
find the next three terms
1. 7,5,3,1….
2. 5,9,13,17…
3. 2,7,12,17…
4. -2,1,4,7 …
5. 0, -8, -16, -24, …
F. Evaluation Write a rule for each sequence as an explicit formula and use it to
find the indicated term.
1. 4,16,64, …5th term
2. 5,9,13,17, …20th term
3. 4, 9, 16, 25, … 10th term
4. 28, 22, 16, …30th term
5. 0, 1, 2, 3, … 15th term
