AL Falah Ready Mix
Established over 18 years ago, Al Falah Readymix is a market
leader in the ready mix concrete industry, operating over 30
batching plants across the UAE and the GCC. Since then, Al
Falah Readymix has signed many mega projects with the
biggest developers in GCC such as Al Dar, Masdar, ADAC,
Kizad, Emal, Nakheel, Qatar Rail and Riyadh Metro. Al Falah
Readymix received Sheikh Khalifa Industry Award at the 7th
Sheikh Khalifa Exellence award Ceremony.
AL Falah Ready Mix is a proud member of Al Falah Holding
Masdar
Masdar, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Mubadala Development Company, is
an initiative that includes the
development of Masdar City, the
world's first carbon neutral, zero-waste
city fully powered by renewable
energy.
Masdar and Al Falah Readymix
Since Cement is one of the main ingredients in
concrete, and is the second most consumed
commodity in the world after water, Al Falah
Readymix has signed an agreement with Masdar
to reduce the amount of cement used in the
specially designed concrete mixes, and therefore
reduce the embodied carbon by more than 30%
while meeting all the durability criteria set by
Masdar City (Cement production is responsible
for around five per cent of the world's carbon
dioxide emissions) .
A special scheme was put in place to offset the
remaining carbon embodied in the concrete used
to build Masdar City.
Research and Development
The Al Falah Ready Mix partnership with
Masdar led to a comprehensive research
and development program to develop
global standards for low CO2 concrete.
This encompasses research and testing at
Masdar City site as well as a research
partnership with the Masdar Institute of
Science and Technology for the
advancement of sustainable concrete
technologies.
The Masdar City Objectives
Al Falah Ready Mix was chosen on the basis of its adoption of
rigorous sustainability criteria for designing, producing,
transporting and placing concrete.

QUALITY SCHEDULE
In order for sustainability objectives to be successfully achieved,
traditional or “business as usual” decision models must now integrate
sustainability into the core decision processes. Decisions around cost,
schedule and quality must be tempered by considering near and long
term impacts of environmental, social and economic priorities.
Carbon Calculation
When Gathering data for Sustainability, different factors must be
taken into consideration for carbon calculation:
1. An Annual Summary for monthly financial activity
highlighting the activity data, Emissions, Monthly Emission
Breakdown and cumulative Emission.
2. Road Calculator.
3. Flight Calculator.
4. Vehicle Efficiency.
5. Refrigerant.
6. Emissions factors highlighting the Emissions source.
Steps toward sustainability
The challenge was to set maximum limits to the carbon
footprint:
1. Erecting batch plants at site to reduce the travel distance.
2. The use of Euro 5 Engine Trucks.
3. The use of locally harvested material.
4. The use of recycled aggregate and material.
5. Complying to concrete temperature control without use of
ice.
6. The use of reclaimer to recycle the returned materials in
the trucks and separate them.
7. The use of Water Treatment Plant to recycle the water.
With sustainability in Mind,
ALFAcrete was born
one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
Neil Armstrong
We command Dubai Municipality on the bold move towards
sustainability by making it mandatory to use sustainable
mixes in Projects in Dubai. We hope other Emirates follow in
the same footsteps to make UAE the sustainable choice for
years to come.
What’s next?
We believe that mixes should be subscribed and
unified under standard codes approved by Dubai
Municipality rather than having different specs
for different projects.
It gives us great pride to be associated
with the Masdar Initiative and Masdar
City; the most ambitious sustainable
development in the world today.
