Work Immersion
According to (Lozada M., 2017) In terms of education, the Philippine educational
system has been developed to provide the learner’s the best. It happened the moment we
changed our own curriculum system from the basic form to widely use one – the K-12
curriculum. And just recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) has released the
guidelines for the conduct of work immersion activities for senior high school students in
the country. Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School curriculum (SHS)
and refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work
simulation which Grades 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual
workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the
supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner. Work
immersion is the counterpart of the internship programs in the tertiary level. The said
learning experience that the students can get from it which can range from 80 to 320 hours
will surely enable and help students as they familiarize themselves with the workplace thus
experience workplace simulation and apply their competencies in areas of specialization.
The completion of work immersion is a prerequisite to graduation under the K-12 program.
This is a first rate on the part of DepEd, since young people like to explore and to connect
with the people, this work immersion will provide them to acquire relevant skills by
performing in actual work setting. The importance of work immersion must be seen as vital
point of giving students a venue to improve them through experiencing real stuff firsthand.
This is the very highlight of the Senior High School program. It helps students to acquire
knowledge and experience that can help them grow as professional individuals.
Furthermore, this program provides opportunities to go through the actual methodologies
of a specific job using the real tools, equipment and documents. In effect, the work place
becomes a development venue for us student trainee to learn more about their chosen
field and practice what we have learn from academy. Experience is considered to be one
of life’s greatest teachers. As trainees they can use it as an inspiration as they gain
expertise in their respective fields. This experience will surely help them not only for their
present job as a student but also for their future job as a professional employee of this
society.
(Malang J., 2018) Site that students were assigned to different public and private
institutions depending on their strand for them to have a glimpse of actual professional
work environment. They also had the opportunity to apply their learning experiences inside
the academe and in return will help them gather meaningful experiences that will be of
great help in the near future. Getting first hand experiences is not just the aim of this
Immersion. It also aims to develop young professionals whose work ethics and values are
admirable and will serve as an epitome to future trainees like them. Work Immersion taught
students the value of punctuality, good working relations with subordinates and superiors,
the importance of information confidentiality, and professionalism inside the workplace.
Students were actually trained to have a good working relationship with their subordinates,
superiors and co-trainees. The respect for diversity is needed inside the workplace since
not everyone will have the same beliefs and principles so it is a must that students will
have open minds for differences so as to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings with their
co-trainees. Trainees were also taught to follow their superior’s orders but not at the
expense of their work ethics and principles. The value of information confidentiality is also
one of the things taught to students inside the workplace. Since there is sensitive
information that they encounter while working, they were tasked to keep everything inside
the office. “What you see, what you hear, when you leave, leave it here” as others will
note. And lastly, students were trained to act as professionals. When it’s time for work,
focus on work. No room for unnecessary chitchat with their co-trainees and not a time for
gadgets and social media. This is a sign that students really value their work. More than
the technical learning, what students essentially learn is work values and ethics. Immersion
does not just nurture globally competent individuals in terms of skills and abilities, but it
also produces ethical young professionals who really value their work and show
unwavering warmth, passion, and commitment towards work.
(Course Hero Inc., 2019) Mention that career guidance and counseling immersion
can be used as a facilitative tool for career counseling for students, especially
those in professional courses. By placing them in a real-world work scenario, it gives
them an opportunity to explore the kind of tasks and activities they would like to do.
Immersion also matches the candidate’s profile with a list of occupations, which can be
used as a reference point for exploring opportunities. Highlights individuals’ self-
awareness and provides a deeper understanding of their interests and strengths in a
work environment. It guides an individual's career choices by matching their interests
and personality with various job p rof iles.
