Cruise-In At The Crossroads

A Father’s Day Tradition
Celebrate Father’s Day weekend at the 37th Mid-America Cruise-in
at the Crossroads in Belleville June 14-15.
The 37th annual event kicks off Friday evening with a classic car
cruise around the Republic County Courthouse Square. Food and free
entertainment are on tap.
But it’s Saturday’s show in Belleville City Park, located at 9th and M
ST, that gives classic car devotees the chance to admire memorable
vehicles from decades gone by. Each year the show attracts cars, trucks
and motorcycles from a multi-state area who compete for recognition
in antique, rod, custom, classic, Rat Rod, old school, antique race cars, as
well as other special-interest modes of transportation.
A highlight is the traditional Parade of Wheels downtown at 11 a.m.
Saturday.

If you happen to know anything about Courtland, then

you know the last weekend in July is always booked.
Because on this weekend, the community comes togeth-
er for a whole lot of fun.
This year marks the 55th-annual Courtland Fun Day,
which is scheduled for Saturday, July 27. But because it’s a
little difficult cramming so much fun into just one day, the
festivities get started early with a barbecue cook-off, perfor-
mances and a street dance Friday night.
A 5K is planned Saturday morning, beginning at 7 a.m.
Other races planned include a one-mile fun run/walk. Other
activities planned include a parade, kids’ games as well as
three-on-three basketball and sand volleyball tournaments.
There’s also food vendors and a beer garden. Saturday
night’s Main Street Dance features headliner Rob Baird, who
takes the stage at 10:30. Also on stage at 10:30 in the beer
garden is cover band, Aces & Eights.
“Having a cover band, Aces & Eights and Rob Baird, a
Memphis singer/songwriter on Main Street Saturday night is
a new thing we are trying,” said organizer Luke Mahin. In the
past, we used a karaoke DJ in the beer garden at night, so While the community

“That was a huge hit since it had not been done since 1990s
or 2000s,” Mahin said. “Probably 300 people, including kids,
were there watching(contestants) try to catch the pig, and put
it in a gunny sack for prizes.”
Mahin said organizers developed this year’s theme as a play
on the local lore about residents waterskiing along the local
canals. But they threw in another element just to make it even
more fun.
“The theme is new and it plays up the ‘rumor’ of people
skiing on the canals around Courtland for fun,” he said. “It has
happened, but doubtful it has been done behind a cow.”

Some version of a fair or harvest festival has been held in

Belleville for nearly 150 years. In 1919 Republic County ap-
pointed representatives from around the county to establish
a county tax-supported “free fair” with no pay gate. The fair is
managed by a volunteer board. When a system of 4-H Clubs
was organized, the fair became the place where the county’s
youth competed for honors in those educational programs.
The Belleville Chamber of Commerce appointed a Fair
Amusements Committee to run a race card and other events
in the historic WPA-era grandstand. A must-see historic fea-
ture on the fairgrounds is the octagonal Floral Hall, a 90-year-
old structure that houses open class exhibits.

Sesquicentennial
150 years ago, on September 29, 1869, 15 early Republic County
settlers came together and formed the Belleville Townsite Company.
From its humble beginnings from a dream on paper to a single
log cabin, Belleville grew building by building. The city has always
borne the name of the wife of one of the founders, Arabelle Tutton.
The community will mark its official sesquicentennial with a
three-day weekend of food and music August 16-18. A series of
events are planned through the summer leading up to the main
event.
Headlining the 150th Celebration is rising Nashville star Lucas
Hoge, who will perform in concert on Friday night, August 16.
It’s a homecoming of sorts of Hoge, who grew up in nearby Hub-
bell, Nebr., and his brother Heath’s band, Bourbon Street, will share
the stage. Lucas Hoge first appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in 2011,
opening for the legendary George Jones, and he’s shared the stage
with Rascal Flatts, Rodney Atkins, Craig Morgan, Hank Williams Jr.
and others. He made his own debut appearance at the Opry in 2017
and has been invited back to perform several times a year. Hoge
is also part of the Armed Forces Entertainment: Wrangler National
Patriot Tour and wrote “Medal of Honor,” which was chosen as the
Wrangler National Patriot official theme song. His album, Dirty
South, debuted at Number 1 of the Top Country Album Sales chart.
The Saturday night lineup includes Mike Martin and Barrelhouse,
Lendon James and the Highway 34 Band, and the DJ Bridwell band.
Organized by Belleville Com-
munity PRIDE, the 150th celebra-
tion will include food vendors, a
parade, fun run, and community
church service on Sunday.

Historic
Tours Take Visitors to
Take a step back in time during the 150th Anniversary of the
founding of Belleville for a walking or driving tour of these historic
sites:

Republic County Courthouse

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Art Deco monolithic style
courthouse forms the centerpiece for Belleville’s Historic downtown square. The
courthouse is also celebrating a milestone year in 2019: the building opened in
December 1939 and replaced the second of three courthouses on the same site.
The courthouse is a marriage of two different designs: the golden era of Greek
civilization, and the contemporary architecture and modern functionality of the
1930s. During regular hours Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors
can see the grand staircase, polished black granite, terrazzo flooring and metal grille
work from the interior. The granite panels on the exterior four sides of the building
are engraved with the names of Republic County townships.
During special holidays throughout the year more than 200 American flags are
raised to honor the community’s veterans as part of the Republic County Patriot
Project.

Downtown Belleville
Downtown Belleville offers a wealth of information for architectural and history buffs alike. A walking tour was made possi-
ble through the efforts of the Belleville Main Street Program Design Committee and a Heritage Tourism Grant from the Kansas
Humanities Council “Kansans Tell Their Stories.
Pick up a brochure at any of the four kiosks on the corners of the Republic County Courthouse square or participating busi-
nesses. The self-guided tour explains the historic building exteriors around the square and residents’ memories of an earlier
era. Building included with the tour are marked with black granite plaques.

High Banks Hall of Fame National Midget Auto Racing Museum

For 110 years drivers have tested their skill and nerve on the
auto racing track in Belleville, and the High Banks Hall of Fame
National Midget Auto Racing Museum celebrates the drivers,
cars, owners and fans that received their “baptism by tire” in
Belleville.
Not just a showcase of local history, however, the museum
is a storehouse of cars, equipment, artifacts and documenta-
tion on racing in America, especially the sport of Midget Auto
Racing, but also sprints, modifieds, late models, Indy cars, and
more. Cars and other artifacts on loan rotate through the mu-
seum regularly.

Boyer Gallery of Animated Carvings

Take an “imagination vacation” at one of the most unique art galleries in the na-
tion. The Boyer Museum of Animated Carvings, 1205 M ST, is housed inside anoth- er
Belleville landmark, the former Harber Ice Cream Plant.
Creator Paul Boyer’s intricate wood carvings depict little figures busy at work distilling
moonshine or shoeing horses or putting roofs on outhouses--and the workers all suspi-
ciously resemble Boyer and his six brothers.
But it’s what makes his scenes “go” that has fascinated generations of views. A complicated set of clockworks, electric meter
gears, chains filched from his wife’s jewelry box, gears and ball bearings--all that require perfect time--make Boyer’s creations
one-of-a-kind.
The artworks are displayed in lighted cases so visitors can get in on the action to make the motion machines move.

Boyer Museum of Animated Carvings is open May through September. Call 785-527-2082 or 785-527-2640

Republic County Historical Museum

US 36 Highway, 612 28th ST, Belleville
The Republic County Historical Society Museum works to honor and preserve the history
of Republic County and its communities. One of the newest “old” displays of history in the
museum is the exterior clock from the original First National Bank building in downtown
Belleville that was saved before the building was razed in 2017. Inside the museum visi-
tors will also find displays that showcase Belleville’s railroad heritage, and business offices
set up like they would have been in days gone by.
The museum lets visitors stroll through an early day agricultural community, complete
with log cabin, school, church, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, railroad caboose and tools.
The main building includes a library for genealogy research as well as numerous county photographs.

Cuba Historic Sites

Featured in National Geographic and on CBS Sunday Morning, the community of Cuba offers visitors a dose of small town
hospitality year around.
Visitors can see a blacksmith shop, a limestone building restored and a host of old-time blacksmith skills demonstrations
several times a year. Named on the Register of Historic Places, the site is the only building in Kansas that served continually as a
blacksmith shop during its entire history, dating back to the 1800s.
Stroll over to the Cuba Community Hall, center of many activities in the community. The hall is handicapped accessible.
Inside its historic facade is a modern facility that can accommodate large groups for informal and formal activities. The upper
floor doubles as the Skate-a-Rama, a roller skating rink open on Saturday afternoons during the winter, and available for rent
anytime for parties.
In 2014 several groups combined to restore a historic scenic backdrop on the stage, a reminder of an era when Czech Sokol
gymnastics groups used the hall, and dramatic performances were staged for entertainment.
The Silverthorne School, a restored one-room school, is located on Main Street and is stocked with memorabilia of
education from an earlier era. Make sure to check out the former office of the late Dr. C.W. McClaskey, a small town doctor who
served Cuba residents for more than 50 years.

end of Gamekeeper Marsh. The refuge is closed to all
activity from Oct. 1 through Mar. 1 except for the special
hunts conducted during hunting seasons. The refuge
gives migratory birds a resting place and increases
hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities on the area.
There are varieties of other wildlife habitats on the area.
Upland birds and small game species use weeds, crop
fields, grasses and shrubs, while big game prefers the
timbered areas. The area offers excellent opportunities to
view and photograph wildlife. Marsh Creek, Gamekeeper
Dam, and Muskrat Landing are shallow boat landings for
hunter access to waterfowl areas.

Rocky Pond Recreation Area and Disc Golf Course

East 12th ST, Belleville

Once a necessary water stop for the Rock Island Railroad, in the ensuing decades Rocky Pond has turned into a popular
camping and recreation area in Belleville. The site, maintained by the City of Belleville, offers fishing, disc golf, camping and
picnicking opportunities year around. A playground, several shelters and cookout areas, camper hookups and private cabins
available for rent make the area a popular summer retreat.
From the day after Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, the pond reflects the holiday season with the Rocky Pond Christmas
Lights, a drive-thru display set to music.

By Jennifer McDaniel
For the Belleville Telescope
Treasu
Scandia resident Paul Kallman knew there were doubts when word for a 400-mile garage sale
along U.S. Highway 36 started to spread.
Even his closest friends told him there way no way he could pull it off - it simply wouldn’t work.
Originally sparked in 2005 among Kallman and fellow Scandia residents Jane Ann Carlgren and
Jim Erickson, the garage sale would not only be a way to stir up interest in Republic County, but other
communities along U.S. Highway 36 from the Colorado border to the Missouri state line.
But what the garage sale eventually grew into was way more than anyone ever expected.
Only eight towns participated that first year, but by 2014, 32 communities were onboard.
Today, the U.S. Highway 36 Treasure Hunt attracts thousands of people to northern Kansas each
year during the third weekend of September. For three days, antique lovers, pickers and treasure
hunters descend on the region, seeking out rare finds.
“People are looking for treasures,” Christiane “Criquet” Cole, Highway 36 Treasure Hunt marketing
coordinator, said. “There’s (been) a trend toward what we call ‘barn finds,’ like old antique furniture,
tools and barnwood. And while that’s still the trend, here we are 14 years later, and now the hunt is on
for mid-century modern, fishing gear, coins and military items.”
The annual event doesn’t just attract the locals, but treasure hunters from across the United States
and even Europe. Cole, who owns an antique store in Phillipsburg, a town along the Highway 36
route, said she’s met individuals from Germany, France, Belgium and Japan.
“What makes us unique is that we’re one highway, in one state that includes 37 towns,” Cole said.
This year’s event is scheduled for Sept. 20-21, with individual sales along the 13-county route. To
better help treasure hunters, the U.S. Highway 36 Association’s website is packed with information
about the sale, including county-specific tips on where to stay, where to stop and where to eat along
the way.
Each year, beginning on Sept. 1, community sale maps and descriptive listings are uploaded to

Depot Market: Selling Vegetables Since 1979

What would you say inspired your decision to start fruit

It was an adventure. It seemed like a romantic idea at the Hours:

it one summer before I left for Ireland. When I visited a very Monday - Saturday 9AM–5:30PM

What do you believe was the greatest breakthrough the 1101 30 Road

highway was a huge breakthrough. As far as sales go the Courtland, KS 66939
