FRONT END ENGINEERING DESIGN (FEED)
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) means basic engineering which is conducted after completion of
conceptual Design or Feasibility Study to produce engineering document & engineering estimate +/- 80%
accuracy. It is often being used as ITB (Instruction To Bid) documents or part of ITB.

• FEED (Front End Engineering Design) means basic engineering which is conducted after completion of
conceptual design or feasibility study.
• At this stage, before start of EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction), various studies take place
to figure out technical issues and estimate rough investment cost +/- 80% accuracy.
• The product of the activity is called “FEED package” which amounts up to dozens of files and will be the
basis of bidding for EPC contract (include instruction to bidder document).
• The FEED work takes from about 4 months up to 1 year (e.g. in case of large sized project such as LNG
Plant).

Typical Deliverables
This work would typically begin after the design basis has been agreed and accepted and would include the
following:
• Finalizing the basic design.
• Preparation of technical analysis and calculations.
• Equipment sizing and specifications.
• Preparation of the P&IDs including line sizing, instrumentation, etc.
• Preparation of material take-off for each of the disciplines.
• Preparation of HAZOP and HAZID procedures.
• Preparation of engineers’ cost estimates (+/-20 percent) for the EPC project.
• Preparation of an ITB (Instruction To Bidders).

EPCM
EPCM stands for “Engineering, Procurement & Construction Management and is a form of projects
management to supervise EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) contractor’s activity to ensure
that project is completed in the term of quality, budget and schedule.
Lower cost.
EPCM contracting offers potential savings on project cost. EPC contractors usually charge more because of
the extra risk they take on from the employer. In EPCM contracting more risk stays with the employer, so
prices should be lower. In addition, the employer has the benefit of negotiating each construction and
supply contract itself, rather than relying on an EPC contractor to get the best price.
Flexibility.
Compared with EPC contracting, the employer has greater freedom to change the project during the works
In EPCM contracting this may be avoided because the employer can negotiate directly with contractors and
suppliers.
Speed.
Compared with EPC contracting, the employer may be able to complete the project more quickly. EPCM
contracting allows the employer to engage the necessary contractors to begin work, without necessarily
finalizing the detail of the project right away or entering into contracts for works or equipment that will
be needed later.
Quality.
EPCM contracting allows the employer to take an active role throughout the project, advised by the
EPCM contractor. In theory this allows the employer to control the quality of the project. Even if
there is no measurable qualitative advantage to EPCM contracting, the employer often feels a
greater sense of satisfaction with the completed project because it has had “ownership” of the
project throughout its course.
