Introduction to Literature
Silent Reading Response (SRR) Instructions
Learning Targets:
Students will be able to:
    independently read and comprehend literature at grade level (RL9.10)
    initiate and participate in a discussion building on others' ideas (SL9.1)
    introduce a topic (W9.2a)
    cite textual evidence to support analyses (RI9.1)
    provide a conclusion (W9.2f)
    write routinely over an extended period of time (W9.10)
Directions:
1. Read silently every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 15 minutes
2. After the timer goes off, take out your Silent Reading Response Sheet
3. Write an I.C.E. response in third person; avoid “I”
4. Write the SSR #, Date and start page # to end page # as your Heading
6. If you are absent:
           o You are responsible to read and write a SRR.
           o You must write a minimum of three (3) sentence summary.
           o You can use your silent reading book or a text of your choice.
8. Be prepared to share in pairs, groups or class
Rubric:
Each entry is worth 5 points:
1 point:      Write the correct SSR #, date & page #s on the top of each entry
3 points: Write an I.C.E. response using Standard English and proper grammar
1 point:      Highlighted and correctly formatted MLA citation
Note: You will start out with 20 points for actively reading per quarter.
One (1) points will be deducted every time you are not actively reading.

                                 I.C.E. response includes:
Introduce the citation:
           Include genre, title and author’s first and last name
In the essay, “A Celebration of Grandfathers” by Rudolfo Anaya…
Cite evidence directly from the text:
              A quote/citation cannot stand alone as a sentence. It needs to be introduced
          Introduce sentence with speaker or author’s last name then comma
          Put copied words in quotation marks
          Put page number in parentheses
          End sentence with punctuation mark
          Highlight citation
 As stated in the text, “Mythology, religion, history, and rituals were not separate things
for Native American people” (1).
Explain citation in your own words:

            Explain in your own words why you chose that citation

     In the essay, “A Celebration of Grandfathers” Rudolfo Anaya
recalls the culture of his native state of New Mexico where old people were
respected and honored. Specifically, Anaya describes how his ancestors
from the Rio Grande, “helped each other through epidemics and the
personal tragedies” (405). This shows that the people from this area
want to keep their heritage alive through strength and endurance.
