Engineering in society
The quality of life achieved by society today is largely due to the work of engineers: thus the
provision of water, electricity generation, transport and telecommunications services,
infrastructure of buildings, ports and roads, manufacturing of multiple products, etc.
Engineering does not operate on society as an external agent but as an intrinsic element; his
is a social activity, like that of other professions. Hence I understand the importance of the
role of the engineer in our day. Many engineers worked in the heat of this totalizing idea and,
consequently, were politicians, officials, leaders, in short examples of what can be an
extensive and profitable community action. In the field of life forces, ethical issues, demands
for justice that involve complications, feelings of compassion and love are continually crossed,
to enumerate a few facets of the human. The engineer must be attentive to all facets. By virtue
of the unity of man and of the impoverishment that derives from dividing and pigeonhousing
it in watertight compartments, we should - taking into account the complexity of present
knowledge - work for an engineering conceived as a broader activity and, at the same time, of
a single trunk, that is, not dispersed in as many branches as those that have sprouted in recent
years.
