UNIT 5 WRITING A REVIEW
Review en castellano significa crítica, reseña. Normalmente tendrás que escribir sobre una
película, una novela o una obra de teatro.
Este tipo de redacción comprende los datos básicos de la obra, nombre, autor, el argumento
de la obra, seguido por nuestra opinión personal de la película, el libro o la obra de teatro.
En el Student´s book y en el Workbook del libro de texto “Definitions”, aparecen tres
ejemplos de “Reviews”. Una película (pg.52), un programa de televisión (pg.125) y en el
workbook, una novela (pg. 43). Debes estudiar y seguir dichos modelos para poder escribir
una buena redacción.
RECOMENDACIONES.
-Organiza la redacción en tres párrafos claros.
1) Introducción: Una breve párrafo hablando del nombre de la película o la novela y el autor.
2) Argumento: Describe que tipo de libro o película es y de que trata.
3) Conclusión: Tu opinión. Por qué te gusta el libro o película.
Write a review of a book which you enjoyed.
I have just read a book called “About a Boy”. It´s a novel by Nick Hornby. It is really very funny
indeed. I enjoyed it a lot.
The main character, Mr Freeman, is thirty-six years old and he lives in London. He is rich and
he is bored because he has never had a job. He is not married and he does not want to be a
father: Freeman wants to be a “free man”. However, he has just met Marcus (aged 12).
Marcus is sad because the other students at school do not like him, and Mr Freeman starts to
help him. Soon Mr Freeman is not free but that now his life is more interesting.
The story is complicated but very interesting, and the end is excellent. I have been thinking and
laughing about it for two days now! “About a Boy” is a brilliant book. I recommend you read
it! I think you would really enjoy it!
A REVIEW OF A FILM
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, is
based on a famous children´s book by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the first of three films Jackson made
about this book.
Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, the Hobbit is filled with wonderful creatures and
magical events. The plot follows the adventures of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who is sent on a
dangerous mission by a wizard called Gandalf. At 169 minutes, the film is too long and some
scenes could have been omitted. However the film is still very enjoyable. Both Martin Freeman
and Ian McKellen give brilliant performances as Bilbo and Gandalf. Finally, in addition to the
unforgettable soundtrack, audiences will enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
Although it is not perfect, The Hobbit is an entertaining film. I highly recommend it to anyone
who enjoys fantasy or loves adventure.
Another film review.
Episode 1, The Phantom Menace, is a science fiction film. It is the new Star Wars film directed
by George Lucas.
It is set in different worlds in the galaxy. The film describes the beginnings of the Star Wars story.
The main characters are a 9-year-old boy called Anakin (Luke Skywalker´s father), Obi-Wan
Kenobi, a young Jedi knight and Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi´s Jedi master. The film follows young Anakin´s
journey and adventures through a galaxy in crisis as he follows his dreams and confronts his
fears.
This is a really action-packed film and the special effects are amazing. I´d definitely recommend
it.

Write a review about a book or a film which you enjoyed. (100 to 130
words).
