SS9107: Table Tennis

Learning Objective:

This 36-hour course aims to impart the knowledge and competencies essential to having an
informed understanding and appreciation of table tennis. Students will be introduced to the
basic skills necessary to play the game.

Content:
• Introduction to the history, rules, and current trends in table tennis
• Concepts of grips, various racket surface(rubbers) and footwork
• Essential technical skills of table tennis - forehand and backhand drives, push, chops
and service of various spins (top spin, under spin and side spin)
• Specialty shots and styles of play
• Singles and doubles strategies
• Different competition formats
• Use of software and video capture system in evaluation of performance

Course Outline:
• Introduction to table tennis – historical development, rules, etiquette and current
trends.
• Establishing the initial level of competency and discovering footwork, grips and
purpose of different racket surfaces (smooth rubber and pimpled rubber)
• Basic forehand and back hand drives and push
• Various service and return serve (top, side and under spin)
• Forehand and backhand chops
• Basic singles play and strategies
• Specialty shots like forehand and backhand loop, different styles of play: offensive
and defensive styles
• Doubles play and doubles strategies
• Individual and team competitions

Learning Outcomes:
• Students will be able to play and enjoy a social game of table tennis
• Students will demonstrate a good understanding of the rules and etiquette of the
game
• They will also understand how local and international competitions are organized
• Students would be able to appreciate the game played at competitive or recreational
levels, and its significance in the sport industry.
