(Adapted: The Teaching Profession by Purita P. Bilbao et.al., 2006)
Below is an excerpt of the findings of a study on Pre-service Elementary Teacher Training
conducted by Rosita L. Navarro, et al in 1994. (Navarro, Rosita et al. Study of Pre-service Elementary
Teacher Training (SPETT, June, 1994). Study them then answer the given questions.
The responses were from 1,460 respondents in 12 regions of the country. The community
respondents’ group consisted mostly of parents (26%), non-government organization (24%), principals and
assistant principals (23%), representatives from the business and industry sectors (21%) and School

The community respondents agreed with 12 beliefs and attitudes, as follows:
1. The most intelligent child should be encouraged to enter the teaching profession.
2. Teachers set moral standard of the community.
3. Teachers make good parents.
4. Men should be encouraged to enter the teaching profession.
5. The teaching profession is one of the lowest paid.
6. Teachers should be paragons of virtue.
7. Children obey and respect their teachers.
8. Teachers play an active role in disciplining children

12. Parents entrust children’s welfare to teachers.
The community respondents were doubtful regarding this item: “Female teachers generally become old
maids.”
They disagreed with this item: “Teachers may inflict physical punishment on children.”
ACTIVITY 1
The respondents of the study cut across various institutions in society – the home, represented by
the parent respondents, the school represented by the principals, assistant principals and superintendents
and the rest of society represented by the respondents from the NGOs, business and industry sectors. By
their responses, the respondents gave you an idea on how social institutions like the family and the school
regard the teacher. Answer the following questions then share your answers in your small group.
    1. Which research finding is most interesting to you? Why?
The most interesting for me is the Community perception on beliefs and attitudes about teachers
and teaching, because in this research that before they respect teachers. As it stated there that the
respondents strongly agreed that teachers help develop the moral character of children in which it
should be, except that teaching a good moral to the children is the parents also role.
2. With which findings do you agree? Disagree? Elaborate your answers.
I agree with #11 “child’s interest in studies depends upon his/her teachers, because if the
teacher is really into her passion in teaching that they know how to handle his/her learners, no
students will be lazy to go to school. That they will be motivated be in school every day that they
are not afraid into his/her subject. Then sometimes this teacher don’t admit that it is also their
fault why their students/learners has low grades it’s because of their doings.
3. Based on the research findings given, what roles are expected of you, the teacher, in society?
Based on the research findings given the respondents expected the role of a teacher is to be
perfect. That the role is to be a model (have good character, good values) not only to learners but
   also to community.
4. So much is expected of the individual teacher. Does this give you any message on how you are
going to spend your period of pre-service education?
In this period of pre-service education I will observe how teachers now handle students
particularly in arising of technology, how to handle the diff. attitudes of learners, their diff. beliefs
and also how to be patient. That it will really help me when I have a own students to handle in the
   future.
5. The findings reveal that teachers are perceived to be respected in the community. Is this respect
demanded of others or something earned by you? Explain your answer.
Everyone should respect teachers and also trust them, for half of the day teachers are the
one who took care of their children, teaching them not only in academic subjects but also teach
them with moral values. Because it’s not easy to deal different kind of attitudes every day.
6. The research was conducted in June 1994. Has the picture changed after twelve years? Any
hypothesis? On what observation is your hypothesis based?
Yes! Because children now a days has no respect to teachers. And also parents are also the
one who are defending their child even if they don’t know what their child wrong doings.
7. If you have questions to raise regarding the research findings, raise them and as a group, answer
the questions. If you are not satisfied with the group answer, raise it with the class and with your
   teacher.
          I don’t have any question.
8. Share your group answers with the class.

order to perform your future roles effectively.

            A. State Shall enjoy academic freedom and enjoy having privilege of expounding
the product of his research and investigation.
The teacher should consider it an obligation to see to it that the national
objective of education is achieved by the school he serves.
             Social Institution Competencies needed
            B. Community A teacher’s job is to educate children, youngsters, teens, and other
people that seek to expand upon their knowledge.
Teachers should be actively participating in community work do without
gambling or any bad and immoral practices.

Teachers should never take advantage of his position to get what her or
                                   his want from the students.
            D. Home Teacher should inform parents Teachers must maintain ethical behavior
in professional practice by accurately representing and maintaining.
Teachers must build strong relationships with parents.
ACTIVITY 3: REFLECTION
A. Any realization about teaching? Write them down.
As of now latest issue, I must say that teachers now are the one they look down. We don’t study
this field just to punish or make something bad to other people. We pursue this profession to help the
children to make their dreams come true. To change the future. As I always say teaching is not a joke,
not an easy profession, you should be passionate and committed. As a future teacher I want to let my
future students how to respect and earned respect from others. Because for me it’s the foundation of
peace in our society. Academic matters can really be learned in a short time but teaching your students
about moral values and about life is a long process. So I hope that when the time comes that I will be a
teacher, students still know what the role of a teacher to their lives is.
B. What is your decision? Pursue the teaching profession or not? Explain the basis of your decision.
I will pursue this kind of field, a teaching profession because I can see that we’re changing into
negative. As a future teacher our concern today is to maintain of what our tradition before, the way
students treat teachers.
