Observation Reflection

Erica Milligan completed her second round of classroom observations, this time in an elementary special education classroom taught by Mrs. Ann Stephenson. Milligan observed Mrs. Stephenson teaching students with a variety of learning styles and disabilities using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods without frustration. Mrs. Stephenson's teaching philosophy focused on mastery of content and reasoning skills through structure and schedules tailored to individual student needs. The experience confirmed Milligan's interest in becoming a special education teacher.

Observation Reflection

Every student that majors in Education has to several semesters of in class observations. It is a

state requirement for a student to earn their degree. This semester was the second time I had

observations. For both semesters I did the 16 hours at Avery ISD.

For each Education class I have done a different grade level. Last time I was in kindergarten

and this year it was elementary special education. Elementary special education includes grades

pre-k through fifth grade and the teacher was Mrs. Ann Stephenson. She is a wonderful teacher

and staff member at Avery ISD. It takes a special kind of person to teach children that are special

needs. Someone can not do it without an enormous amount of time and patience.

Mrs. Stephenson has a positive impact on the students she teaches. Each student required a

different grade level of learning and the teacher had to have different styles of teaching for every

child. Every student learns differently no matter what class they are in but for students of special

populations its even harder for them to understand what is being taught. I witnessed every

learning styles in this one classroom. Some students were taught with visual learning by using

pictures, others were taught with an auditory style and a few used kinesthetic hands on style

during math lessons. With all these styles being taught Mrs. Ann never once got frustrated and

each student left her class understanding the material that was being taught.

Even though all these learning styles were used the instructor still had her own personal

philosophy of teaching. The one used in this class was perennialism, which focuses on mastery

of content and development of reasoning skills. After witnessing this philosophy, I believe it is

the best one for this kind of environment. The students in this class need structure and a schedule

to follow each day. Many have learning disabilities, and this is the best way to make sure they

are succeeding in education. The teacher did however make sure each lesson was student

centered for each individual child. The lessons were taught in a way that the child could

understand it but still learn the same things as other students.

After observing in special education, I am very seriously considering taking the proper classes

needed to become a special education teacher. This was the best experience in a class

environment that I have ever had. Growing up with two siblings that were special needs put me

at a better advantage then others when it came to interaction with these students. Teaching is

something that I have always wanted to do, and special populations has always been the classes

that interested me the most. This semesters observation has pushed me to continue my education

and to follow my dream of teaching.
