and they follow the principles of comprehensive dentistry treatment planning. The college is
equipped with the latest of armamentarium in endodontics.

RETREATODONTICS

TO RE-TREAT OR NOT TO…A LONG PENDING DECISION

Endodontic treatment has noticed a paradigm shift in recent years. This shows the general public's
growing selection and trust on root canal treatment as an alternative to the extraction. Over time,
patients have become more confident selecting endodontic treatment because of the changing
perception that pain can be managed, techniques have improved and success is achievable.
However, root canal system plays an important role in the success of the endodontic therapy. This
system is not as simple as it looks to be. Consequently, any opening from the root canal system
(RCS) to the periodontal ligament space should be thought of as a portal of exit (POE) through
which potential endodontic breakdown products may pass. Endodontic failures can be because of
inefficiency in shaping, cleaning and obturation, iatrogenic events, or re-infection of the root canal
system. Before the final decision is made with any treatment, it is important to consider all
interdisciplinary treatment options in terms of time, cost, prognosis and potential for patient
satisfaction. Endodontic failures must be evaluated so a decision can be made among nonsurgical
retreatment, surgical retreatment, or extraction. Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment procedures
have enormous potential for success if the guidelines for case selection are respected and the most
relevant technologies, best materials and precise techniques are utilized.
