“Then began a new era for the Filipinos; little by little they lost their old traditions, the
mementos
of their past; they gave up their writing, their songs, their poems, their laws in order to learn by
rote mother doctrines which they did not understand, another morality, another aesthetics different
from those inspired by their climate and their manner of thinking. Then they declined, degrading
themselves in their own eyes; they became ashamed of was their own; they began to admire and
praise whatever was foreign and incomprehensible; their spirit was dismayed and it
surrendered.” These are the words of Jose Rizal were he visualized Filipinos and it seems that
these are pertinent today.
113 years after General Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence, the question remains the same.
Are the Filipinos truly free? We are truly free from the dangers and problems brought by the
Spaniards and American soldier but we capitulate to the indefinite invasion of neo-colonialism.
Neo-colonialism invasion globalization, commercialization in the Philippines. It was our heroes
dream to liberate the Filipinos from any form of foreign slavery, but today because of extreme
poverty Filipinos work to foreign lands and serve the same foreign country who oppressed us
before. Filipinos are still the shadow of colonial past, a past that is comparable to a parasite that
is stuck to the national character. Are we truly okay with this deteriorating of patriotism towards
our own country?
Colonial mentality is one the problems in the Philippines. Colonial mentality is internalized
attitude of a cultural inferiority felt by people as a result of colonialization. It corresponds to the
belief that the cultural values of the colonizer are superior to one’s own. through the years, we can
see its effect on our society, and maybe the colonial history of the Philippines may be the primary
factor to blame. Filipinos barely patronized their own products. Philippine music and culture are
being ignored and underappreciated because of this behavior. Sad but true, every morning we wake
up and do our daily day routine. Filipinos love to listen to hip-hop songs by foreign artist. Filipinos
love to wear Lacoste, Gucci, Nike, and other foreign products. A typical Filipino breakfast which
consists of hotdogs, cereals, and much of these are foreign products. When going to the cinemas,
we patronize international films because our colonial culture made us to believe that local
productions are inferior in all aspects.
Economic Effect
Filipinos perception that imported products are better than the local products that are made it the
Philippines. people prefer to buy things that are imported simply because they are made in other
countries. Without a doubt, The economy will go down because the Filipinos do not want to buy
their own products. It may not totally decrease the economic growth of our country but still it has
a negative effect in our country.
Cultural Effect
Filipinos are known for their hospitality and helpfulness. One famous culture of the Filipinos is
the utang na loob, or debt of gratitude. In which the Filipinos would owe someone who helped
them to overcome their problems. But, because of colonial mentality, It somehow twist the concept
of owing someone. A person with colonial mentality would not want to owe anything from
someone and because of that, it destroys the Filipino’s culture of pakikisama or harmony.
Social Effect
Filipinos bully and discriminate their fellow citizen who cannot speak fluent English. One example
of this is in social media in which when a person posted a caption in English but the grammar is
wrong, people would make fun and discriminate them.
