SERVING THE
ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES

The Electronic Industries Association (EIA) now in its 70th year is the leading national
trade organization representing U S. electronics manufacturers. Committed to the
competitiveness of the American producer, EIA represents the entire spectrum of
companies involved in the design and manufacture of electronic componens, parts,
systems and equipment for communications, industrial, government and consumer uses.
Originally founded in 1924 as the Radio Manufacturers Association, EIA, with more
than 71 years of service to the electronic industries, has maintained a quick reaction
capability to recognize problems which are common to the industry or segments of the
industry, and to mount action programs leading to the solution of these concerns. Because
of its broad representation and its reputation for constructive action. EIA is nationally
recognized as the spokesperson for the electronic industries.

Membership

EIA membership is open to all firms manufacturing electronic products in the United
States . Certain other organizations may be admitted as Associate Members.

Administration

Broad EIA policy is established by a Board of Governors whose members are elected
by the various Divisions of the Association. The EIA Executive Committee oversees
programs delegated to it by the Board. An experienced professional staff of 160 persons,
headed by a salaried president, serves EIA from a headquarters building located in
Arlington, VA.

Organization

Organized along product lines, EIA Groups and Divisions are the action centers around
which most of the Association's work revolves . They provide the concentrated and
specialized attention required by the issues facing the electronic industries, particularly the
interface with legislative and regulatory bodies on the federal and state levels . Each
Group/Division has its own mandate and objectives, its own Board of Governors, and
initiates its own agendas . Each implements its own activities to meet the needs of its
industry. Association members may belong to as many Groups/ Divisions as appropriate
to their product lines. Groups/Divisions include: Consumer Electronics, Industrial
Electronics, Components and Government Division.
EIA Departments provide services in marketing statistics and other data, engineering
standards, legislative and regulatory information, government relations, and public affairs.
Services and programs of a broad nature which benefit the entire industry are also provided

to the EIA membership through Board of Governors sponsored programs The services of
all EIA Departments, Councils and Panels, as well as the administrative legal, accounting
and production services of the Association, are accessible to each Division.

 A SUMMARY OF THE EIA STANDARDIZATION PROGRAM

The EIA Engineering Department operates in a comprehensive standardization

program as evidenced by over 1,000 standards and publications currently
—
available through EIA . These documents have been prepared and revised by
more than 5,000 industry and government representatives who participate on the
Engineering Department's 275 Committees.

EIA standards development activity is conducted through Panels, Committees

and Working Groups made up of interested persons from EIA member and non-
member companies, government, the academic community, and others.
Following Committee and public review and comment, and review by the
Engineering Department Executive Committee, the document is published as an
official EIA Standard and made available through sale by the Association’s
Standards Sales Office.

Many EIA Standards become American National Standards through ANSI

approval, and many form the basis of U S. positions in international standards
development in the IEC and ISO

EIA has developed and issued Standard EIA- 476-A on Source and Date Code
Marking. This Standard outlines requirements for source and date code marking
on electronic components and describes the assignment of component
manufacturer identification numbers and their sequence on the component to be
marked, along with the lot date code.

 EIA SOURCE AND DATE CODE BOOK

1. What is the EIA Source Code?

It is a numeric symbol, assigned and registered by EIA Headquarters, which may

be stamped or marked on any or all products to identify the production source or
the vendor assuming product responsibility.

The EIA code, in addition, provides for adding numerals to the source code
symbol to identify the year and week of production.

2. How does the date code work?

In addition to a source code, it may be desired the date of production. This can
be done by adding, following a hyphen (-), the last two digits of the production
year plus the number of the week of that year.

A hypothetical example of the application of the EIA date code to the source code
follows: Say a company is assigned the source code 113. To this is added two
-
digits for the year - such as "95" for the current year, or "96" for 1996 and
another two digits for the week of the year. The combined source and date
codes would be, in this case:

113 -9510

which would represent the company's number "113" plus "95" for 1995, the
production year, and "10" for the week of March 6 - 1 2, the production week . For
convenience in identifying the week, date code tables in the back of this booklet
give the number of each week in both 1994 and 1995.

If a component manufacturer is unable to use the four -digit date code, and an
alternate three -digit code may be used by taking only the last digit of the year .
The example above would then become:

113 - 510

3. To whom is the EIA service available?

To all manufacturers of radio - television and electronic equipment components.

This service is extended to all EIA members without charge . For non-members
an annual registration fee of $ 50.00 is charged.
