QUIZ (Fill in the blanks)

(1)_______________________________________________ is a format specifically used in France (though the

debates are commonly held in English). Two teams of five debate on a given motion. One side is supposed to
defend the motion while the other must defeat it. The debate is judged on the quality of the arguments, the strength
of the rhetoric, the charisma of the speaker, the quality of the humor, the ability to think on one's feet, and
teamwork.

The first speaker of the (2)________________ (or Prime Minister) opens the debate, followed by the first speaker
of the (3)__________________ (Shadow Prime Minister), then the second speaker of the Proposition and so on.

Every speaker speaks for 6 minutes. After the first minute and before the last minute, debaters from the opposite
team may ask Points of Information, which the speaker may accept or reject as he wishes (although he is supposed
to accept at least two).

The (4)__________________________________ organizes its National Debating Championship upon this style.

As the debate progresses, speakers may be interrupted in two ways:

First is by a (5)_________________________________________________________________ which is made
by standing up with one’s hand on one’s head or one’s hand outstretched – the speaker may or may not choose to
accept this but is obliged to accept at least one and expected to accept two during his or her speech.

Another is by a (6)________________________________________________________________, made

directly to the chairman who must accept it. It concerns the running or the procedure of the debate and is not
included in the timing of the speech. It may only come from the ten speakers participating in the debate.

There are five (5) adjudication criteria in Paris-style debating.

(7)_____________________ is a criterion which regards both the content of the speech and the research done for
it.

Another criterion is (8)_____________which concerns how the content of a speech is put forth. This includes
several elements: structure of the speech; timing; use of rhetorical devices; use of humour, pathos, or other
emotions to draw the audience in.

(9)___________________________ regards team spirit, the coherence within a team, and how well speakers
respect their respective roles within said team while (10)________________________________ takes into
account how well teams interact with their opponents.
