Position Paper

Social media is widely used around the world and helps connect distant family members, but it can negatively impact close family relationships. The document focuses on how social media ruins family bonds by drawing people away from real interactions with family at home in favor of online connections. Studies show regular family meals and bonding time help child development and adolescent well-being. However, social media tends to separate family members as they spend more time online than with each other, weakening family communication and closeness over time if misused. The document recommends parents guide children's social media use and that families make time to interact and stay connected in person.

How is Social Media Changing Family Relationships

Social media is defined as websites and other online means of communication that are
used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and
professional contacts. In the modern era, internet has grow to be one of the most
powerful sources to connect people. With the advancement of internet, social
networking sites are becoming popular and have become the most up to date amd
attractive tools for connecting people across the world. But how does it changes family
relationships? Does it improve or ruined the bond between family members? This paper
will solely focus on its claim that social media ruins most family relationships.

The power of social media is spreading throughout the world. Based on the statistic
showed by Statista, as of 2017, almost 2.46 billion people are using social media
worldwide. Some of the most popular Social Networking Sites include MySpace,
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, Viber and Whats App. The most popular one is
Facebook. The number of people using Facebook worldwide reached up to 2.2 billion.
Facebook's tagline states, "Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in
your life". It may help other people to communicate with their friends and family
members who are living in far places, but what about the families in the same roof? As
we all know, there are a lot of families who are living together than to those families who
are living away from each other. Social media helps in connecting and maintining closure
between family members that are far away, creating distance among close family
members and breaking of relationships. It is badly affecting the relation of the children
with their parents and other family members. Most of the time, youngsters seem to be
busy in using the social network and they do not find time for their family and siblings.
They spend a lot of time in enjoying doing gossips with their online friendsand uploading
fun pictures and statuses but they don't pay any heed toward their family. They prefer
spending their time on social media rather that spending time with their family members.

A study by the US University of Rochester Medical Center published in the journal

Pediatrics noted that families who sat doen to dinner together can ward off childhood
obsity. Another study by McGill University Indicates regular family bonding time can
benefit the mental well-being of adolescents. Family interactions can help children learn
to internalise and externalise problems, express concerns and feel valued as part of the
family unit.

Social networking is a connection that just can’t be broken. It tends to draw people away
from the real world. Many people focus on social media to distract them from their real
life problems. Doing so it has caused people to care less for personal relationships with
their friends and family, it is an outlet for people to leave the real world. Without
noticing, social media slowly separates everyone from their family members. Less
communication means less closure and it results to less family bond. Social media is
taking away the time that should be spend together with our family. Social media can be
very helpful in many cases but if misused it can have very serious effects on
relationships. The revolution on social media has brought drastic changes to family life
and children tend to know about their friends rather than their parents and siblings.
Therefore, Social media changes family relationships into a negative one. As a
recommendation, parents should guide their children on how to manage their time and
always remind them about the proper use of social media. A family should spend mre
time together to catch up and share the happenings in their everyday lives.
