Board Games
Definition:
A tabletop game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on pre-marked surface or
“board”, according to a set of rules.
Any game played on a board, especially one that involves the movement of pieces on the
board, such as chess or checkers.
Importance:
-Have fun and feel good
-Family Time
-Memory formation and cognitive skills
-Reduces risks for mental diseases
- Lowers Blood pressure
- Speed up your responses
- Reduce stress
-Grows your immune system

Types:
1.) War Games- main purpose is to defeat or destroy your opponent.
(Ex. Chess,Checkers and Go)
2.) Race Games- Involve a number of players attempting to reach or destination first.
(Ex. Snakes and ladders,Monopoly,Scrabble,Pictionary)
3.) Alignment Game- Which requires players to place their pieces on a game board to reach a
particular configuration. It also require player to strategically position pieces on a board rather
than position pieces across a board to reach a destination.
Characteristics:
- Board Games contain specific rules. It includes the amount of players needed, the
number of spaces on board, number of possible moves and limitation of what can be done
in a particular game.
- Board Games are games of skills. The number of moves and positions in games of skill
are more open-ended, and can be endless.
- Board games are turn based. Like the roll of the dice and combination of letters to create
a particular word in scrabble.
- Board Games require two or more players. Board games are social in nature because
they require players to interact meaningfully with other players.
- Board games have a particular set of criteria. This is separate from other forms of
games which brings fun and teaches important early learning skills.

Definition:
A word game in which two or four players score points by placing tiles bearing a single
letter onto a board divided into a 15x15 grid of squares. A mind game that requires wide
vocabulary.

A. Alfred Mosher Butts
-Out-of- work architect from Pough keepsie, New York, decided to invent a board game.
Through analyzing the game, he found they fell into categories: number games, such as dice and
bingo, move games, such as chess and checkers and word games, such as anagrams.
B. James Brunot
- A game loving entrepreneur who become enamored of the concept.He is the one who
published scrabble after it was invented and designed.

- The real story behind SCRABBLE Brand Crossword Game is numbers.
- COLECO declared bankruptcy, and its primary assets,the SCRABBLE and parches,were
purchased by Hasbro,Inc,owner of Milton Bradley Company,the nation’s leading game

- The first annual National School SCRABBLE championship was held in Boston on April
26,2003.

How to play the game:
1. Without looking at any of the tiles in the bag,players willtake one tile.The playerthat has the
letter that is closest to ‘A’will begin the game.A blank tile will win the start of the game.The tiles
are then replaced to the bag and used in the remainder of the game.
2.Every player will start their turn by drawing seven tiles from the scrabble bag.
3.The player can place a word ,they can exchange tile for new tiles or they can choose to pass.
4.When a player chooses to exchange tiles,they can choose to exchange one or all of the tiles
they currently hold.
5.After tiles are exchanged,the turn is over and players will have to wait until their next turn to
place a word on the board.
6.Players can choose to pass at anytime.If the player passes two times in a row,the game will end
and the one with the highest score will win.
Scoring:
1.Extra point values- if a tile is placed on this squares,the value of a tile will be multiplied by 2
or 3.(2x and 3x)
2.Double Letter Scores-light blue cells that double the value of the tile placed on it.
3.Triple Letter Scores-dark blue cells that triple the value of the tile placed on it.
4.Double Word Score- light red cell and when a word is placed on these square,the entire value
of the word will be doubled.
5.One Single Use- when using the extra point squares on the board,they can only be used one
time.
