CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Backgrounnd
The development of time have made a big impact on the world of tourism.
It can be seen from everyone has their own business and activities, resulting in a
sense of tension and boredom. When people have free time or leisure, they will use
it well and be useful in accordance with what they want. To restore clarity of mind,
get new inspiration, fun and freshness, that is people goal when they feel bored,
tired, and tense after doing the activities they do. One of the activities they can do
to fill out and get what they want is with traveling.

As it is known that Indonesia has so many tourist attractions started from

beautiful nature, strong culture, religious diversity and also a very diverse culinary
taste in every region in this country. From one city to another city offers a tourist
attraction that has its own uniqueness. Actually, many tourists from abroad come
to Indonesia usually to learn culture, to know history and not to forget to taste food
from a region.

One of the tourism that is highly developed is a tourism culinary. Culinary

connoisseurs are sometimes willing to spend money to go to a region just to taste
the typical food in tourist destinations. Tourists travel all over the world to seek
different types of cuisine and create memorable experiences through them (Long
(2004 ; Hall & Sharples 2003, Bessiere 1998). Besides, Vice President for F & B
Operations Asia Pacific Hilton Worldwide, Markus Schueller in Press conference
in Kompas.com on February, 2nd 2014 once said that culinary typical of a country
or city can clearly determine where the tourists choose to vacation. So that tourists
nowadays not only do traveling for visit tourism destination but they also want to
taste some typical food in a region that they are visit.

One of cities in Indonesia that has many tourism culinaries is Palembang.

Palembang culinaries are so many such as pempek, model, laksan, burgo, ragit and
many others. Starr et al. (2003) suggests that local foods may have several
2

advantages. Besides the taste of the foods are different. Palembang culinaries are
also sought by tourists. Even one of the typical foods of Palembang, Pempek
managed to become the third champion of the most popular traditional dishes in
Anugerah Pesona Indonesia Award in 2016.

The government of Palembang so far has made efforts in promoting tourism

in Palembang especially in the culinary sector such as culinary festivals, fairs,
exhibitions and other culinary events. But it is only temporary. People have no
memory of it. They just enjoy the show for a while and not long term. Not only that,
according to I Gede Pitana as Deputy Development of International Tourism
Marketing of Tourism Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia in ForNews.Co
February, 11th 2017, "South Sumatra has a lot of potential in tourism but its
promotion is lacking . South Sumatra has a lot of things that not sell so the outsiders
do not know. "

Nowadays, people often use many ways to promote for example through
audio visual such as video and film. Based on Asra (2007,p.5) audio visual media
is a media that can be viewed at once can be heard, such as sound movies, video,
television, and sound slides. Actually, there are some informations that people get
from audio visual. From audio visual also can introduce a city as media promotion.
A city can be known to many people by promoting from audio visual.

Today people can use film as media in order to promote their cities. Since
film has its own magnetic power for its audience. Lots of places where shooting a
film can become a new destination. From watching one film, it can also make
people interested in tasting food same like in the film. According to Viva.Co.id
Monday, December 7th 2016, some of the famous films are made on locations of
new tourist attraction.

For example Laskar Pelangi Film one of the best films in Indonesia that took
in Belitung Island to be its shooting place. In addition to be inspiring, this film also
explores that island now become favorite destinations for domestics and
international tourists. The other example is Let’s Eat film from South Korea that
3

got succes to make viewers interested in visiting South Korea to taste the food eaten
by the actors and actresses in the film.

In Palembang, there are few people promoting culinaries through the film
as promotion media. Whereas culinary in Palembang is very potential to be known
by tourists. Through film media, viewers can see repeatedly for a long period of
time. So when they come to Palembang they will remember the foods that in the
film and start to try them. Based on the description above, the writer is interested in
writing the paper with a title “ Designing short film as media promotion of
Palembang Tourism Culinary”

1.2 Problem Formulation

“ How to design short film as media promotion of Palembang Tourism
Culinary ?”
1.3 Problem Limitation

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Culinary and Tourism

Ignatov and Smith (2006,p.238 cited in Mason & O’Mahony 2007) defined
culinary tourism as tourism trips during which the purchase or consumption of
regional food (including beverages), or the observation and study of food
production (from agriculture to cooking schools) represent a significant motivation
or activity.

According to Hall et al. (2003,pp.9-10) visitation to primary and secondary

food producers, food festivals, restaurants and specific locations for which food
tasting and/or experiencing the attributes of a specialist food production region are
the primary motivating factor for travel.

According to Wolf (2002,p.5) said that culinary tourism or food tourism as

simply travel in or-der to search for, and enjoy, prepared food and drink.
Furthermore, Murray (2011,p.3) defines that culinary tourism in the following three
terms:

• Travel that includes the appreciation and consumption of local/regional foods;

• Travel for the primary purpose of experiencing and enjoying food and beverages
or to attend culinary-specific activities such as cooking schools, visiting a food or
beverage production/processing site, a farmer’s market or a taste trail;

• Unique dining and beverage experience.

2.2 Culinary tourism as travel motivation

Mitchell & Hall (2003) states that while travelling eating can be part of an
exciting, stimulating, significant, ceremonial experiences and gratifying the senses.
For example, a simple lunch or dinner will always stay in memory when it was
experienced at a breath taking place or sight or after an exciting day of visiting a
6

new destination. Besides, Murray (2011) claimes that in existing literature culinary
travellers are defined as travellers who spend double the amount for food and
beverages during their holidays as all other tourists.

However, Karim (2006) states that tourism and culinary can also be a
cultural motivator. Travellers want to explore and learn about a new culture and
their traditions. Food and beverages are fundamental components in nearly every
culture and therefore a good way of experiencing the culinary tourist lifestyle and
traditions of a destination as a tourist. Similarly, travellers may visit a destination
or even return to it because of a specific and unique dish, food component or
beverage.

2.3 Benefits and impacts of culinary tourism

A study by Handszuh (2000 cited Du Rand et al. 2003) argued that culinary
tourism implicate various possible benefits to a destination. These are: a sustainable
infrastructure where the supply of local and imported food is handled, local
economy is supported, sustainable ways of tourism are encouraged and it
strengthens the authenticity of a region. Entrepreneur and tourism organization need
to work close together to meet the demands of the tourists.
Carlsen and Dowling (2001) stated that the cultural and natural landscapes
need to be acknowledged as the crucial and maybe even as the main feature of food
and wine tourism. For most food and wine travellers it is one of the strongest desires
to experience well maintained natural and heritage landscapes during their culinary
activities.
Therefore, Williams & Dossa (2003) said that the natural and cultural
landscapes need to be protected which demands the cooperation of the product
suppliers, destination management organizations and tourism associations
2.4 Type of Media to promote culinary tourism

According to Park (2015,p.21) there are some types of media such as,

1. Television,
2. Film,
7

3. Print Media: Book, Magazine, Newspaper, and Brochure,

4. Internet,
5. Social media,
6. Mobile.
2.5 Film

According to Javandalasta (2011,p.1) “film adalah rangkaian gambar yang

bergerak membentuk suatu cerita atau juga bisa disebut Movie atau Video.” It
means a series of moving images form a story or can also be called film or video.

According to Whanau (2011,p.1) film is as an art of audio-visual

storytelling, film is a medium of communication rich with social implications,
created within different social, historical and cultural contexts. Besides, Danesi
(2010,p.134) film adalah teks yang memuat serangkaian citra fotografi yang
mengakibatkan adanya ilusi gerak dan tindakan dalam kehidupan nyata. It means
that film is the text that contains a series of photographic images resulting in the
illusion of motion and action in real life.

There are so many movie privileges, some of which are:

1. The film can present powerful emotional influences,

2. The film can illustrate visual contrast directly,

3. The film can communicate with the audience without limit reach,

4. The film can motivate the audience to make changes.

Based on some definitions above, the writers can conclude that, film is the
text that contains a series of images that move to form a story that resulting in the
illusion of motion and action in real life.

2.6 The Role of Film as media to introduce tourism

Macionis (2004) says that the film’s role can be tracked as an information
source (or pull factor) and consequently influence the tourist motivation (as a push
factor) and the decision to travel to a destination. While Beeton (2005) suggests that
8

film tourists visit locations to view the scenery, enjoy an activity, relive an
experience (as encountered on film), or to obtain an element of celebrity status
through being associated with the location. Busby and Klug (2001) provide an
extensive list of different forms and characteristics of movie-induced tourism:
 a film location can be an attraction in its own right (before or as a result of
being depicted on film); . movie tourism can be part of a main holiday;
 movie tourism can occur as the main purpose out of special interest;

 movie tourism packages can be created by the private sector, only elements
of the film (icon, actors, natural scenery, historical background, storyline,
symbolic content, human relationships) are the focal point of tourist interest;
and/or finally

 travel programmes
2.7 Film Types

Effendy et al. (2003) once stated there are four kinds of films that are, Film
Stories, News Film, Documentaries and Cartoon Film.

Besides, Javandalasta (2011,pp.2-3) said that

“ Dalam pembuatan film, memiliki sebuah idealisme dalam

menentukan tema untuk “membungkus” cerita agar dapat diterima
oleh penontonnya, agar penonton dapat memahami jenis film apa
yang mereka lihat, adapun beberapa jenis-jenis film yang biasa
diproduksi untuk berbagai keperluan, antara lain, film dokumenter,
film pendek dan film panjang”.

It means in the making of the film, it has an idealism in determining the

theme to "wrap" the story in order to be accepted by the audience, in order for the
audience can understand what kind of movies they see. They are documentary film,
short film and long film.

2.7.1 Short Film

According to Cooper et al. (2005,p.1), short film is being created as an art

were short and 15 – 25 minutes long and less. Besides, based on Irving et al. (2006)
9

short film is a complex and demanding activity, even for the experienced. A myriad
of problems inevitably arises involving script, crew, budget, casting, lighting, and
so on. Each project has its own unique set of challenges.

According to Vojković (2010) in Sudaryanto (2013,p.8) festival film paling

terkenal di dunia justru festival yang menghadirkan film-film berdurasi sangat
pendek. Or we can says that film festival which famous in the world is have short
duration.

So, the writer can conclude short film is a film that have complex problems
with own story in it which has a view duration no more than 60 minutes.

2.8 Film Maker

According to Wibowo (2017,p.179-182) “ ada empat kepala yang

mengetuai dan bertanggung jawab dalam pembuatan sebuah film yaitu seorang
produser, sutradara, asisten sutradara dan pengurus kamera.” It means the people
behind the scenes in the making of the film are the producer, director, assistant
director, director of photography.

Based on Wibisono (2010) “Unsur pokok film diantaranya, produser,

penulis skenario, sutradara, aktor atau aktris, juru kamera, penyuntingan, penata
artistik”. It means making film including, producers, screenwriters, directors,
actors or actresses, cameramen, editors, artists. In addition Munir (2017) says that,

“Film merupakan hasil karya bersama atau hasil kerja kolektif. Dengan
kata lain, proses pembuatan film pasti melibatkan kerja sejumlah unsur
atau profesi. Unsur-unsur yang dominan di dalam proses pembuatan
film antaralain: produser, sutradara, penulis skenario, penata kamera
(kameramen), penata artistik, penata musik, editor, pengisi dan penata
suara, aktor-aktris (bintang film).”

Based on three of definition above, the writer can conclude the people
behind the scenes in the making of the film are producer, director, assistant director,
script writer, director of photography, talent, artists, and editor.
10

2.8 Film Genre

Dirks (2018) stated that there are ten main film genre :

1. Action, this genre usually include high energy, big-budget physical stunts
and chases, possibly with rescues, battles, fights, etc.
2. Comedy, are light-hearted plots consistently and deliberately designed to
amuse and provoke laughter (with one-liners, jokes, etc.) by exaggerating
the situation, the language, action, relationships and characters.
3. Crime and Gengster, are developed around the sinister actions of criminals
or mobsters, particularly bankrobbers, underworld figures, or ruthless
hoodlums who operate outside the law, stealing and murdering their way
through life.
4. Drama, are serious, plot-driven presentations, portraying realistic
characters, settings, life situations, and stories involving intense character
development and interaction.
5. Epics or Historical, epics include costume dramas,
historical dramas, war films, medieval romps, or 'period pictures' that often
cover a large expanse of time set against a vast, panoramic backdrop.
6. Horror, Horror films are designed to frighten and to invoke our hidden worst
fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and
entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience.
7. Musical or Dance, are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or
song and dance routines in a significant way.
8. Sciene Fiction, Sci-fi films are often quasi-scientific, visionary and
imaginative - complete with heroes, aliens, distant planets, impossible
quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy
villains, futuristic technology, unknown and unknowable forces, and
extraordinary monsters ('things or creatures from space'), either created by
mad scientists or by nuclear havoc.
11

9. War, films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual
combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air
provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film.
10. Western, are the major defining genre of the American film industry a
eulogy to the early days of the expansive American frontier.
In this report, the writer conduct to design short film as media promotion of
tourism culinary in Palembang that include Epics or Historical and Drama Genres
of film.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Method of Research

Research is the process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting data in

order to understand a phenomenon (Leedy & Ormrod as cited in William 2007).
While the research method used by the writer in this final report is research and
development.

Borg and Gall (1983), propose the steps for doing research and
development. They are as follows: (1) research and information collecting; (2)
planning; (3) preliminary form of product; (4) preliminary field testing; (5) main
product revision; (6) main field testing; (7) operational product revision; (8)
operational field testing; (9) final product revision and; (10) dissemination and
distribution. The schemes are shown in the following chart :

Revision Implementation

Source : Borg and Gall (1983)

However, to ease and make shorter the process of designing the product, the
writer used research and development modified by Sukmadinata. While according
to Sukamdinata (2005), there are three steps in research and development, they are:
13

(1) Preliminary Study, (2) Model Development and (3) Final Product and Testing
and Dissemination.

1. Preliminary Study

This step is known as preparation process in research and development. The

steps of this part are first, literature study. In this step, the writer found and learned
some theories about short film, process and concept of creating the short film and
the information about some culinary, after that the writer analysed it. Second, field
survey, in this step the writer collected the data were done with observation and
interview. Then after the writer got the data, the writer arranged the draft of a
product.

2. Model Development

The second step was field testing and revision. After the writer made the
draft product, the writer conducted field testing. This activity consists of limited
testing and wider testing. In the limited testing, the writer gave a draft of film to
experts and product target. They gave their comment, suggestions, and advices from
the experts which used as revision for wider testing. Wider testing is same as limited
testing, but in this activity, there were more experts. Then, the writer analysed all
the data, comments, suggestions and advices to revise the product.

3. Final Product Testing and Dissemination

This is the last step of research and development modification. In this step,
after the writer analyze the data comments, suggestions and advices, the writer
make final improvements to the model developed to produce the final product.
Unfortunately, the writer did not do dissemination because the lack of cost, law,
legality, time and skill.

3.2 Subject of Research

According to Woody (1998) research comprises defining and refinding

problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions, collecting, organising and
14

evaluating the data, making deduction and reaching conclusions, and at last
carefully testing the conclusion to determine whether they fit the formulating
hypothesis. While, Amrin (1986) defines that subject of research is people or things
that will used to obtain more information. Subject of research is very important
because the data will be observed.

Based on the description above, the writer conclude that subject of research
is a method of solving the problem and finding problem solutions systematically.
The subject of this research are in English Department at State Polytechnic of
Sriwijaya, Lorong Basah Night Culinary Market, Terapung Restaurant, Benteng
Kuto Besak backyard and Pempek 26 Ilir market.

3.3 Sampling

According to Fridah.W (2002) Sampling is the act, process, or technique of

selecting a suitable sample, or a representative part of a population for the purpose
of determining parameters or characteristics of the whole population. Nurdiani
(2014) says that the purpose of sampling is to get the descriptive of the charateristics
of observation unit that including sample and supposition population parameter.

While, Alvi (2016,p.9) says that there are two various types of sampling
method, Probability and Non-Probability sampling method. For this research, the
writer use snowball sampling that included in Non-Probability sampling method.
According to Nurdiani (2014) snowball sampling is a muti-steps technique, that
follows the analogy if snowball which is from the smallest, and then getting bigger
step because there is an additional of snow when laid down in the snow yard. The
sample of this research were experts of film and linguistics.

3.4 Technique of Collecting Data

Sugiyono (2013) states that the technique of collecting data is the most
strategic step in research, because the first aim of research is getting the data.
Sugiyono (2007) states that there are five types of collecting data: Observation,
Documentation, Interview and Triangulation. In this report, the writer used
15

interview and observation types. The methodologic approches used by the writer
were:

a. Observation
Sukmadinata (2005) says that observation is a technique or the way to
collect the data by doing observation based on going activity. Observation involves
recording the behavioral patterns of people, objects and events in a systematic
manner. There are two types of observation according to Hariwijaya (2007)
“ Pertama, observasi partisipan, yaitu peneliti melakukan penelitian
dengan cara terlibat langsung dalam interaksi dengan objek penelitiannya. Dengan
kata lain, peneliti ikut berpartisipasi sebagai anggota kelompok yang diteliti.
Misalnya peniliti ingin meneliti pola interaksi pekerja bangunan terjun langsung
di lapangan menyamar sebagai pekerja bangunan. Kedua, observasi
nonpartisipan, yaitu peneliti melakukan penelitian dengan cara tidak melibatkan
dirinya dalam interaksi dengan objek penilitian”.

Based on the explanation above, type of the observation conducted by the

writer was non participant observation. the writer observed about the location that
will be choosen as location are for shooting in short film. The writer observed about
some places that sell an original Palembang Culinary related to story and content
of film. From the observation that was conducted by the writer, the writer found
English Department at State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya, Lorong Basah Night
Culinary Market, Terapung Restaurant, Benteng Kuto Besak backyard and Pempek
26 Ilir Village to be place to conduct that activity.
b. Interview
According to Emzir (2010) an interview is a process of communication or
interaction to collect information with questions and answers between a researcher
and an informant or a research subject. Besides, Sugiyono (2006) stated that
interviews can be done in a structured or not structured and can be done with face
to face or even using the phone.
a. Structured Interview
This interview is used as collection techniques, when researchers or data
collectors have known with certainty about what information will be
obtained. In practice, in addition to bringing the instrument to guide the
16

interview, the data collector can also use tools such as tape recorders,
pictures, brochures and other materials that can assist in interviews.
b. Unstructured Interview
Unstructured Interview, the intention is that the free interview where
researchers do not use structured interview guide that has been
systematically and fully equipped for data collection. Interview
guidelines are used only in the form outlines the issues to be asked.
The writer used unstructured interview to collect the data. Because
unstructured interview is more flexible and aimed to collect the complex
information, but the questions are still compiled and not deviate from the purpose
of the interview that has been set.

The writer interviewed some experts related to the research. They Mr.
Wendy Permana as linguistics from Sumatera Ekspress Palembang, Mr. Frans
Ramadhoni as linguistics that work as lecturer in LP3I University Palembang, Mr.
Dadang Wahyudi as the experts of design that work as staff in Culture and Tourism
South Sumatera Province, are Ms. Choirun Nisa as film script writer from Layar
Taman Community Palembang, Mrs. Tita Wulandari as linguistics work as English
lecturer in Bina Darma University Palembang, Mr. Diemroh Ihsan, Prof.Ph.D as
linguistics work as English lecturer in Sriwijaya University. Mr. Kurnia Bintoro as
Video Editor from Kompas TV, Mr. Bayu Dwi as video editor from Layar Taman
Community Palembang, and Mr. Angger Nugroho as film editor and design from
Palembang Movie Club.

3.5 Technique for Analyzing Data

After collecting all the data that will be collected and processed by the
writer. Result of data presentation is informally presentation through observation
and interview to informants served by providing explanation, so the results can
answer the problem.
17

a. Observation

In this research, the writer choose the best locations for shooting places
related to the story of film and made a list for the locations of film. They are Bar
and Kitchen at English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya, Lorong Basah
Night Culinary Market, Terapung Restaurant, Benteng Kuto Besak backyard and
Pempek 26 Ilir Village. Some of them are included as tourism culinary in
Palembang.

The writer also visited the places directly. The writer observed Bar and
Kitchen at English Department at State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya then wrote the
situations and conditions in there. The writer observed about the locations that will
be used in film. Shooted a film and recorded a part of scene of film, after observed
English Department at State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya, the writer went to Pempek
26 Ilir Village. The writer observed the pempek seller in there, the situations and
facilities. The writer found Pempek Cek Ida was available and be ready to conduct
the activity.

The writer also observed Lorong Basah Night Culinary Market and wrote
the informations of seller that bought Palembang Traditional food and the writer
also wrote the situations and conditions in there. Shooted and recorded a part of
scene of film. At the last, the writer observed Pindang Mbok War terapung
restaurant and wrote the situations and facilities in there. After that the writer wrote
the informations of menu in that restaurant that could be used for tourism culinary
in the writer’s film. The writer also observed Benteng Kuto Besak backyard was
available to be an object for the locations of this film. The writer took a video of
film and recorded some part of scene of film in there.

After all, the writer saved all the data from the observations that would be
as reference to support the data and input into the outline to design short film as
media promotion of Palembang tourism culinary.
18

b. Interview

The writer interviewed some experts related to the research. There are the
experts of film and linguistics. First, the writer contact Ms. Nisa as script writer of
Layar Taman Community Palembang to asked for permission to do an interview.
The writer came to Mr. Big Coffe Shop to meet the expert at 2 P.M on April, 10 th
2018. The writer asked about the languange of the script, how to make a good script
and not monotonous.

The writer also contact Mr. Ramadhoni as lacturer of LP3I Palembang

University. The writer came to House of Merich Cafe to meet him at 5 P.M on June,

CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents about findings and discussion of the designing short
film as media promotion of palembang tourism culinary.

4.1 Finding

This final report was known as Palembang tourism culinary short film which
will be watched by viewers and it has an specific information. The writer designed
short film including the information about the tourism culinary and the traditional
foods of Palembang. After planning and design, the writer used R & D method by
asking some experts to find out the advantages and disadvantages in short film as
media promotion of Palembang tourism culinary and make it more better.

4.1.1. Preliminary Study

This is the first step which is known as preparation process in research and
development modification steps. In preliminary study, the writer did three steps,
they are :

4.1.1.1 Literature Study

In this step, the writer read some books and journal that related to the

the script and the product or short film. Each expert, gave comments based on their
field. Those experts are who capable in making film and linguistics.

lecturer at Sriwijaya Univerisity Palembang. He gave the comment about
the dialogue of the script. In bahasa version it was clearly good. He stated
that in the conversation using Indonesia languange it should be naturally

4.2 Discussion

From the findings above, there were some additional part that should
disscussed by the writer.

A. Literature Study

From those books and e-journal that have been read, the writer can conclude
that short film is a film that have complex problems with own story in it which has
a view duration no more than 25 minutes. It means that making short film or the
activities must be inovated in order to make the viewers curious and not bored. The
director in making short film was sticking education and information element on its
activities. The elements in here were invloving the script, crew, budget, casting,
lighting and so on. It means the elements of film have their own duties and set of
challenges. In this reseacrh, the write has been did some of the elements such as,
wrote the script, formed crews in making short film, casted the actors and actresses
for the writer’s short film, and so on.

B. Field Survey

In field survey, the writer can conclude that the observation can be as the
refrences to conduct the new inovation for the reseachers. For example in this
research, the writer watched some of the previous short film on youtube and directly
went to the tourism culinary places so the writer knewa and got the weaknesses that
would be improve in making short film.

Through the observation, the writer also conlude that tourism culinary in
Palembang still less of promotion. The reason why the writer propose this activities
to promote and to make viewers interest to come to Palembang city especially to
taste the traditional food in this city through film. The other reasons of making short
film were because the lack of media in promoting tourism culinary Palembang.
58

4.2.1 Model Development

A. Limited Testing

In limited testing, the revisions were about the content and languange in the
script of film. From the first expert Ms. Nisa as film script writer said that there
were some selection, marging, and the connecting of word that unapproriate and
should change. The writer decided to change the mistake because it can makes script
be better and the readers will be more understand.

The second experts, Mr. Ramdhoni as linguistics of English. He said that

the script of film should have much revision because in translating sentence by
sentence should be suitable and have the same meaning to the Indonesia languange.
The writer also accepted the suggestions because to make the script be better and
the international viewers easy to understand the story of film. So, the writer very
pay attention to the script that translated into english in order to make the script of
film can more readable and acceptable to viewers.

The third expers, Mr. Wahyudi that capable to check the content of the film.
He said that the backsounds of film no need the maximal volume. The writer also
accepted the expert’s suggestion. If the backsound in film very loud, it can be
influence the feel in the story. It was also same like the theories in the literature
review by Danesi (2010) one of the privilege of film is the film can present powerful
emotional influences to the viewers.

B. Wider testing

In wider testing, the revision were about the content, the design of film, and
languange of film. First, the expert of the content of film. Mr. Permana said that in
the story of film the main and supporting character should added started in the
beginning of the story of film. The writer decided to added the suggestions because
in previous story, the writer just focus on main of the story directly without opening
and closing.
59

The second and third experts, Mrs. Wulandari and Mr. Diemroh were
comments about the consistant of languange, grammar and the selections of word.
There were some sentences of script that unreadable and inappropriate so that the
experts suggested to the writer to improve it. The writer accepted the advices
because to make the script be better and viewers can be more easy to get what the
writer means and find the lessons of the story by revised the the grammar in the
script of film.

For the content and the design of the film, there were some comments and
suggestion from other experts. The fourth expert as video editor, Mr. Dwi said that
the film should be more live by added the transitions. So, the writer was added the
transitions to make the one part to another part was connecting. And the viewers
would be more enjoy the film.

The next expert was Mr. Sunero as film editor suggested about the coloring
of film or effect. The writer feels it is not really necessary to add in all the scene,
but the writer gave the effect in the part of scene that was in climax and sad scene.
The suggestion from the expert was suitable with the theories from Javandalasta
(2011). But in the other scene, the writer only added the backsound to supporting
the emotions of the story and make it more simple.

The last expert Mr. Bintoro as video editor from Kompas TV. He stated that
in promoting something by audio visual the writer should give the emotions by
added the slow motion or speed motion. This suggestion was suitable with the
theories from Whanau (2011) film is a medium of communication rich with social
implications, created within different social, historical and cultural contexts. The
writer add the motion in important part such as when the actor and actresses of film
eaten the food, the actor in the bad or happy conditions and the writer also add when
the lecture tasted the food serve by the student of the film.
60

BAB V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1 Conclusion

From the observation and interview has been conducted by the

writer, it can be concluded that designing short film can be as one of media
promotion of tourism culinary in Palembang. By watching the short film, viewers
not only enjoy the story but also know the tourism culinary in Palembang. So,
viewers can get the lessons from the story and also have some informations about
the places, the foods, the situations of the people’s activities of tourism culinary in
Palembang trough short film. In making short film also have some of elements that
involve. Film also have being created as an art and have its own in short duration.

5.2 Suggestion

The writer has some suggestions to the film makers in Palembang.

In making film, they have to make the new innovation not too monotonous in
choosing the story that will be filming. The writer suggests that film makers can be
increase the story from the tourism in Palembang especially in culinary side.
Because there are still many tourism culinary in Palembang that has not promoted.
