Laboratory Safety

Be aware of hazards on the floor.


• Avoid tripping over cords and objects.
• Avoid slipping in puddles of water.
No play in the activity area.
No pushing, no shoving, no play, and no
mischief. Keep each other safe.
No electronic devices or music/earbuds in
the activity area. They are distractions and
cause you to be careless.
They also waste
your time.
Follow instructions as written. Follow
instructions as outlined by the teacher.
Listen carefully. Ask for clarification if you
do not understand.
Use the equipment and supplies the
correct way. Equipment and supplies are
not toys.
Do not force items together. Some may
not fit together. Forcing items together may
damage them or injure you.
Do not put metal objects (or any other
objects) into electrical sockets. You will
get shocked, or worse, electrocuted.
Wear eye protection when working with
chemicals, glass, granular materials, fire,
tools, or anything else that may harm
eyes. Listen to your teacher’s directions.
No food or drink in lab area. There may
be toxic materials on the lab benches or on
your hands.
Do not use broken glassware or broken
equipment.
• Give the broken glassware to the teacher.
• Tell the teacher immediately if you break
glass items.
Do not throw broken glassware away in
the classroom trash bin.
• Give the broken glassware to the teacher.
• The teacher will dispose of the broken
glass correctly.
If you spill chemicals, tell the teacher
immediately.
Do not dump chemicals down the sink.
There will be labeled containers for
chemical waste. Ask the teacher for help.
Do not put unused
chemicals back into their
original containers. The
unused chemicals may be
contaminated.
Do not taste, drink,
or eat any chemicals
or substances in the
laboratory.
Do not mix chemicals together randomly.
They may cause harmful chemical reactions.
Do not breath in vapors from beakers or
flasks. Waft the vapors only if you need to
smell the contents.
Point test tubes, flasks, and beakers away
from you and others when mixing
chemicals, pouring chemicals, or heating.
When using flames or Bunsen burners
• Tie long hair back behind head.
• Use eye protection
• Wear fitted or protective clothing
Do not grab or hold hot objects with your
bare hands. Use clasps or insulated gloves.
If a fire starts in the classroom, tell the
teacher immediately.
• Move away from the fire.
• Listen to teacher instructions.
If you get chemicals on
your clothing or in your
eyes, notify the teacher
immediately.
The teacher will move you to
the eyewash station or
shower as needed.
Use power tools and sharp
objects only under the
supervision of an adult or
the teacher.
Do not use power tools or
sharp objects when
unsupervised.
Always wash your
hands after completing
an activity in the
laboratory area.
