1 SUMMARY
Fire Resistance test conducted in accordance with section 8 of BS 476 part 22:
1987 on an un-insulated metal Doorset: -
A specimen of un-insulated, single leaf metal doorset with vision panel had been
subjected to a test in accordance with section 8 of BS 476 Part 22: 1987. The specimen was
mounted in the wall such that the door leaf swing away from the heating conditions. The specimen
had overall dimensions of 1200 mm Wide and 2400mm High. The leaf was provided with a vision
panel of 254mm by 254mm having 5mm thick Ceramic glass properly sealed with ceramic fiber
tape. The door was also provided with a fire rated door closer and fire rated lock.
The Galvanized steel frame was fixed to the concrete wall by M8 X 75mm long anchor
bolts, Three on each side of the frame and one anchor bolts on the top of the frame. See Figures
in. Appendix B.
The leaves were hung to the frame by four architectural grade stainless steel ball
bearing hinges. The door was in closed condition but not locked.
The specimen satisfied the performance requirements specified in section 8 of BS 476 Part-
22:1987 for the following period:
Integrity 120 minutes.

2 INTRODUCTION
The objective of the test is to determine the fire resistance performance of specimen of an
uninsulated, single Leaf, metal doorset when tested in accordance with section 8 of BS 476 part
22: 1987, Methods for determination of the fire resistance of un-insulated doorset and shutter
assemblies.
The test report Should be read in conjunction with the BS 476 Part 20: 1987, Method
for determination of the fire resistance of elements of construction (General Principles).
3 TEST INFORMATION

4 MONITORING EQUIPMENTS:
• Nine K type thermocouples to monitor the temperature of the furnace, which
were kept at 100 mm from the exposed face of the specimen (see Figure-1).
• Five K-Type thermocouples to monitor the temperature of unexposed face of the
specimen, (see Figure-3).
• A pyrometer to measure temperature on hot spots of unexposed surface.
• Two pressure gauges to monitor the furnace pressure gradient along the height of
the furnace.
• 6mm and 25mm gap gauges for monitoring the integrity of specimen.
5 TEST SPECIMEN CONSTRUCTION:
A detail drawing & description of the test specimen construction is presented in the
appendix C.
6 METHOD OF INSTALLATION:
The specimen was installed in a movable wall of bricks lined with concrete. The wall
was provided with a pre-prepared opening for the specimen. The frame of the door was
fixed in the concrete with anchor bolts. The detail of the fixings is outlined in Appendix C.
7 TEST PROCEDURE:
The test was conducted in accordance with the procedures specified in section 8 Of
BS 476: Part 22: 1987. The ambient temperature of the test area prior to the commencement
of test was measured. The pressure inside the furnace was maintained at 0 ± 15 pa relative to
atmospheric pressure, with a neutral pressure axis at about 1200mm from the notional floor
level.
The furnace temperature was monitored by 9 K type thermocouple and is recorded
after every one-minute interval. The furnace temperature was controlled so that the mean
furnace temperature complied with the standard temperature/time curve specified in section
3.1 of BS 476-Part 20: 1987. See Figure 1.
The temperature of unexposed face of the specimen was monitored by means of Five (05)
thermocouples fixed to the unexposed surface (See Figure 4). The mean temperature of the
unexposed surface of the specimen were recorded.
The gap gauges were used, if considered appropriate, to determine compliance with
the integrity criterion of the standard. There was no requirement of using the gauges as no gap
was observed.

➢ The ambient temperature of the test area prior to the commencement of test was 20 0C.
➢ The furnace temperature was controlled so that the mean furnace temperature complied
with the requirements of Clause 3.1 of BS 476 Part 20: 1987. The temperature recorded
is shown graphically in figure 6.
➢ The mean temperature rises of the unexposed surface of the specimen are shown
graphically in figure 8.
➢ The pressure gradient within the furnace is shown in figure 9.
➢ The %age deviation of the furnace temperature from the standard Temperature is shown
in table 1.
➢ The temperature of each furnace thermocouple is shown in figure 7.
➢ The test was discontinued after a heating period of 120 minutes.
9 OBSERVATIONS.

00:00 Start of the test. The ambient temperature at the start of the test was
20 0C. the mean temperature of the furnace thermocouple was 22 0C
and that of the unexposed surface was 21 0C as shown in figure a.
03:00 Smoke start releasing from the specimen @ different location as
shown in the figure 4.
10:00 Discoloration of the paint started @ different Location as shown in
figure 5.
49:00 Light intermittent flaming was observed at the top left corner of the
door leaf as shown in figure -6. The flaming fall within the acceptable
range as per BS-476 part 22.
108:00 Light intermittent flaming was observed at the lock position as shown
in figure. The flaming fall within the acceptable range as per BS-476
part 20.
After 108 minutes no significant changes was observed and the test
was continued upto 120 minutes.

10 RESULTS
When tested in accordance with section 8 of BS 476 part 22: 1987, the integrity
requirement of the standard was satisfied for a period of 120 minutes.
Integrity- it is required that there is no collapse of the specimen and no sustained
flaming on the unexposed surface.
11 LIMITATIONS
The result only relates to the behavior of the specimen of the element of construction
under the particular conditions of the test; they are not intended to be the sole criteria for assessing
the potential fire performance of the elements in use nor do they reflect the actual behavior in fires.
(See Clause 12 of BS 476: Part 20: 1987)
The test result only relates to the specimen tested and obtained using the door to frame
gaps recorded in this report.
The fire resistance performance of doors of this design may change if substantially different gaps
are used. Application of the results to the specimen of different dimensions or incorporating
different components shall be the subject of a design appraisal.
