Introduction
Actuator
The engines are fitted with a Regulateurs Europa series
2221 actuator of the electro-hydraulic type, comprising
an electrically operated pilot valve and hydraulic servo-
mechanism which operates the fuel pump racks.

The hydraulic system is completely self contained, with

its own servo oil reservoir and an internal oil pump
driven directly by the drive shaft. The hydraulic system is
self bleeding, and maintains oil pressure at a pre-set
value by means of two spring loaded accumulators - one Fig.1 Governor Actuator as fitted to the engine.
of which acts as a relief valve.

Assembly & installation

Full information on the actuator is contained in the

manufacturers literature.

Introduction

The governor actuator is driven by the camshaft gear, at

the free end of the engine, through a spur gear keyed to
the governor actuator shaft.

Removal/replacement

If the gears or bearings require renewing, ensure the

drive shaft, keys and distance piece are free from
damage and tighten the retaining nut to the figure quoted
in DATA.

If the governor gear requires renewal, check that the

shaft and key are free from damage and tighten the
retaining nut to the figure quoted in DATA.

When fitting the governor actuator to the drive housing,

Governor Actuator linkage Ruston RK215

Introduction

The fuel control shafts are connected to the governor by

a series of levers and control rods. The control rods are
adjustable to compensate for wear in the linkage.

Fitted to the end of the 'A' bank control shaft, outside the
crankcase, is a control lever that is connected to the
governor and a hand shut off lever.
Turnbuckle Link Control lever

The control lever, which is free to rotate on the shaft, is

operated by a link from the governor. As the governor
moves from the minimum to the maximum fuel position
the control lever is moved upwards. The coil spring then
rotates the shut off lever, which is fixed to the shaft, to
operate the linkage to the unit injectors. The spring link
serves to protect the internal components of the Manual
governor and unit injectors should any part of the linkage Fig.1 Governor lever and linkage to theshutdown
control lever.
lever
be stiff or seized.

When the governor returns to the minimum fuel position Fig.1 Governor linkage

a pin operates on the shut down lever to close the unit

injectors. Spring protection, against seized or stiff
components, is provided on the linkage at its connection
with the unit injectors.

Governor fuel pump relationship

This relationship is most important and the figures given

below should be set and checked before attempting to
run the engine.

NOTE:- To ensure the correct relationship between the

Governor and fuel pumps adjustment must be made to
the turnbuckle link and ratio lever to ensure the engine
load matches the governor output indicator.

A final adjustment may be required when the locomotive

load control system is tested.

GOVERNOR OUTPUT 0 –

Maintenance
For maintenance hours see schedule

B - Interval

Lubricate the linkage and check for wear and tightness

of the components.

Adjustment / Initial Set-up

Should the linkage have been dismantled or components

replaced the alignment should be checked as follows:-

1. Set injector racks at mid position (10mm block)

and the Governor at position 5.

2. Fix link J (nominal length 570 mm) to levers D

and K with link F (nominal length 510 mm)
assembled to levers C and D. Set link F at 90O
to lever C as shown. Drill and pin lever C.

3. Repeat for lever E at 90O to link as shown. Drill

and pin lever E.

4. Set injector racks at no fuel (20mm block) and

governor at 0.

5. Fit governor lever H, Rod end bearings and

turnbuckle with locknuts to give a length of
115mm, and fit to ratio control lever A.

6. Set fixed lever B against stop on lever A and

lock in position with grub screw. Drill and pin
lever B.
.
7. Linkage is now set. If adjustment between
banks is found to be required. Links F and G
can be adjusted in steps of 1/2mm (1/2turn of
ball ends). Finer adjustment must be carried out
on individual control rack adjusting screws.
