Introduction :-

 Insertion of a Catheter into Bladder through urethra for Various Purposes.

Purpose :-

 To drain Urine.

 For Bladder irrigation.

 To collect Urine sample.

 At the Time of Surgery.

Types of Catheterization :-

1. Indwelling / Retention :-

 Indwelling Catheter is kept for a period of time in Bladder.

 E.g. Foley's Catheter

2. Straight Catheter :-

 यह Short Period of time केलए काम मे


ली जाती है

 Ex:- K-90

3. Supra Pubic Catheter :-

 इसम Anterior Abdominal पर Incision लगाकर Catheter को


Directaly Bladder म insert करवाते
ह

Eg. :- Malicot, Pezzer ( Mushroom Catheter )


4. Ureteric Catheter :-

 इसमेCatheter को Cystoscope क सहायता से


Renal pelvis म pass करते
ह

 Coude Catheter ( Curved tip ) - Used in


Enlarge prostate.

Retention Time :-

 Plastic Catheter :- Up to 1 week.

 Rubber / Latex Catheter :- 2 - 3 week

 PVC ( Poly vinyl chloride Catheter ) :- 4 - 6 weeks

 Silicone Catheter :- 2 - 3 month

Procedure :-

Male Patient Catheterization Female Patient Catheterization

Position:- Supine with leg abducted Position - Dorsal Recumbent position


( Slightly ) Penis Pull upward &
Forward at 90° .

Clean The Genital :- Clean the Clean the Genital :- Clean from front
Penis in circular motion center to (above urethral opening) to back.
Outward.

Dry sterile cotton use to clean.

Insert :- 7-9 inch Insert :- 3 inch


Lubricate :- 6-7 inch Lubricate :- 1-2 inch
 Lubricate with Water
soluble Jelly.

Note :- use sterile water to inflated the ballon because saline crystalize & result in
incomplete deflation.
Catheter Size :-

 Adult Male :- 16 - 18 French

 Adult Female :- 14 - 16 French

 Child :- 8 - 10 French

 Infant :- 5 - 8 french

Note :-

 To avoid pulling the urinary Catheter, Nurse should tape the Catheter on Patient's
Upper thigh.

 Maintain strict sterile technique during Catheterization.

Condom Catheter :-

 Not insert into Urethra.

 The Catheter use for a short period
