Yashoda – Puthana
Lord Krishna was born. King Vasudeva knew that his son would have no life there. So he took Krishna and
laid him in Ma Yashoda’s lap. Ma Yashoda gave him her milk and was bringing him up with love and care.
One-day Lady Puthana visited Ma Yashoda. Yashoda loved Puthana’s beauty and powers. She believed that
Krishna will have a better life if he drank Puthana’s milk. So, she happily laid him in Puthana’s lap.
Rest of the story – we all know it.
Now the question: If what King Vasudeva did is correct, then does it mean that what Ma Yashoda did is
also correct?
How would we know, if the lap into which we are ready to send our kids is that of Ma Yashoda’s or that of
Lady Puthana’s? Not every lap is so clear cut to identify as that of a mother’s or demon’s. How do we
choose? Will we ever know?
Our kids go to foreign countries to achieve better life, so that they can have better options, better income, better
lifestyle, better security and so on. Our kids love to run to big corporations for employment, again for better
everything. Our kids would want to study different than what we are used to. Our kids would want to marry
different than the way we are used to. Our kids would want to live different than what we are used to.
We want our kids to study different than the way we were educated so that they might have a better life. We
want our kids to go for what we believe are greener pastures than what we currently have.
This new lap, that our kids are eager to go into and we are so eager to send into: Is it just the razzle-dazzle of
Puthana or the love of Yashoda? If we hold back, will we be a foolish Vasudeva and get our Krishna killed?
If we move forward, will we be a naïve Yashoda and get our Krishna killed?
Both Vasudeva and Yashoda were just parents doing what they thought was good for their kid. Just like us.
It was Lord Krishna who spotted the difference in the lap he got into. When put in Ma Yashoda’s lap he
soaked in the love along with the milk and when put in Lady Puthana’s lap he sucked out the life energy along
with the milk, all the while returning her to her true form so that not just himself but everyone else around
him knew Puthana for what she truly was.
Lord Krishna! Give me the knowledge to be able to differentiate Puthana’s lap from Yashoda’s lap before I
put my child into it. When I fail, give my child the strength to not just come out of Puthana’s clutches but to
be able to show others too what that lap really is.
