Chapter I
Problem and Its setting
I. Introduction
Solid Waste Management poses a major challenge in society because any activity or
process generates waste. Further, the management of solid waste is considered worldwide to be
an expensive public service. Most of the funds are allocated in the major cost centers or service
categories of the solid waste management namely solid waste collection, solid waste disposal
and recycling (Hunt, et. al., 1997). The Philippines generates more solid waste as population
increases, living standards are enhanced, and urban and rural areas are being developed.
According to a report by the Senate Economic Planning Office (SEPO), the country’s waste
generation steadily increased from 37,427.46 tons per day in 2012 to 40,087.45 tons in 2016.
Meanwhile, solid wastes produced by Philippine cities are expected to increase by 165 percent
to 77,776 tons by 2025. Residential areas produce the most amount of solid wastes at 57 percent,
while wastes from commercial establishments, institutional sources, and industrial or
manufacturing sector accounted for 27 percent, 12 percent, and 4 percent of the total waste
generated, respectively.
Plastics have become a vital asset for humanity, often providing functionality that cannot
be easily or economically replaced by other materials. Plastic products have brought benefits to
society in terms of economic activity, jobs and quality of life. They have replaced metals in the
components of most manufactured goods, including for such products as computers, car parts
and refrigerators, and in so doing have often made the products cheaper, lighter, safer, stronger.
Plastics have taken over from paper, glass and cardboard in packaging, usually reducing cost and
also providing better care of the items.
The growing post-consumption plastic waste problem is a real concern that needs to be
resolved with the cooperation of all stakeholders in various industries and a revisit of the
consumption methods of the general public. Among the existing solutions recycling is one of the
most convenient and easiest ways. This research is conducted to help people on how to reduced
Plastic Pollution by making Trash Bin out of Plastic Bottles.
II. Statement of Problem

They can use this as a reference to develop their research.
IV. Definition of Terms
Plastic-
Plastic Pollution - it is the currently one of the biggest environment concerns. It is the
accumulation of any object that is made of plastic. It can affect in earth’s environment that
adversely affect wildlife, habitat and humans.
Polyethylene terephthalate - also called as "PET", is a highly recyclable plastic resin. It is use in
foods and other packaging.
Recycling - it is a process in which waste is turned into a useable material.
Toxic Compounds - mixture of substances that can damage our body such as cell or organs.
Environmental Degradation - it is a deterioration of ecosystem.
Toxic Pollutants - it is also like toxic compounds, it can contaminate our body which can cause
disease and birth imperfection if we absorb it.
Friendly Floatees - example of plastic toys, eg; rubber ducks. It helps the other ships to study the
current in the oceans.
V. Scope and Delimitation
This study focused on how to reduced Plastic Pollution by making a Trash Bin out of Plastic
Bottles. This study will not be dealing with the production or intended to be sold in commercial,
yet we persuading other people to recycle the plastic materials that can be easily used and be
creative.
VI. Limitation of the Study
The study is limited due to absence of respondents. The study do not have respondents and the
researchers will not conduct a survey or interview. It only utilizes information i
Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
According to Laura Parker (2019), plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing
environmental issues, as rapidly increasing production of disposable plastic products
overwhelms the world’s ability to deal with them. Plastic pollution is most visible in developing
Asian and African nations, where garbage collection systems are often inefficient or nonexistent.
But the developed world, especially in countries with low recycling rates, also has trouble
properly collecting discarded plastics. Plastic trash has become so ubiquitous it has prompted
efforts to write a global treaty negotiated by the United Nations.
In addition, Plastic Pollution is accumulation in the environment of synthetic plastic
products to the point where they create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well as for
human populations (Vladimir Melnik, 2015).
Plastic pollution occurs in many forms, including but not limited to littering, marine debris
(man-made waste that has been released in a lake, sea, ocean, or waterway), plastic particle
water pollution, plastic netting and Friendly Floatees. A large percentage of plastic produced each
year is used to make single-use, disposable packaging items or products which will get
permanently thrown out within one year. Often, consumers of the various types of plastics mainly
use them for one purpose and then discard or recycle them (M.SUBBA REDDY et al., 2014)
Conserve energy future (2019) states that “plastic pollutions happen when plastic has
gathered in an area and has begun to negatively impact the natural environment and create
problems for plants, wildlife, and even the human population. Often this includes killing plant life
and posing dangers to local animals.”
According to Rinkesh (2019), as the world’s population continues to grow, so does the
amount of garbage that people produce. On-the-go lifestyles require easily disposable products,
such as soda cans or bottles of water, but the accumulation of these products has led to
increasing amounts of plastic pollution around the world. As plastic is composed of major toxic
pollutants, it has the potential to cause significant harm to the environment in the form of air,
water, and land pollution.
Plastic pollution is when plastic has gathered in an area and has begun to negatively
impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, wildlife, and even the human
population. Often this includes killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals. Plastic is an
incredibly useful material, but it is also made from toxic compounds known to cause illness, and
because it is meant for durability, it is not biodegradable (Felt, 2019).
There are many ways to reduce the number of used plastic bottles. According to O.Berk,
people have worked together to develop a process to recycle plastic bottles and convert them
into other useful items, including clothes, furniture, fences, and new plastic bottles, bags, and
containers.
According to (Parker, 2019) The day New York supermodels began carrying tall bottles
of Evian water as an accessory on fashion show catwalks in the late 1980s surely signaled the
future ahead. Billions of bottles were sold on the promise that bottled water is good for hair
and skin, healthier than soft drinks and safer than tap water. And it didn’t take consumers long
to buy into the notion that they needed water within reach virtually everywhere they went.
Studies have shown that tourists (hotel guests/clients) are willing to pay more for
environmental friendly products and services such as hotel accommodation (Kang et al.,2012;
Masau and Prideaux, 2003). Many hotels are practicing environmentally friendly policies and
recycling to manage waste, which is benefitting them by an increase in profit and getting positive
customer response and improved corporate brand image (IHRA, 1995).
The most common recycled material from hotels include aluminum such as beverage
cans, copper such as wire, steel from food and aerosol cans, old steel furnishings or equipment,
polyethylene and PET bottles, glass bottles and jars, paperboard cartons, newspapers, magazines
and light paper, and corrugated fiberboard boxes. This can be useful in generating substantial
revenue in terms of savings of hauling fee and salvage value of the waste, apart from savings to
environmental degradation. (OECD, 2007; Wilson et al., 2006)
Chapter III
CONCLUSION
Plastic Pollution negatively impacts almost living every organisms in the world. Because
we are the source of plastic pollution, human being must take an action to improve the quality
of life. We should minimize the use in plastics in our daily lives and recycle the waste as much as
possible.
Plastic pollution affect many people, not only the consumers but plastic pollution also
affects the environment and animals. We are affected by plastic pollution because we all dispose
of them incorrectly and because we are unaware of the consequences of using plastic bags. The
amount of plastics we use is important because once we throw the plastic away they will just pile
up and create pollution, which is harmful to the environment because how we dispose of the
plastic bags isn’t really going to help due to the amount of time it takes for them to decompose.
The pollution multiplies as the population grows. There are many causes of pollution but
the main problem is how to lessen the plastic waste. Our lifestyle has made us use plastic in
almost everything we do and we can say that it brought a negative impact to our environment.
Using plastic bottles increases land field and marine pollution. There are other ways in
reusing and recycling plastic bottles aside from making a trash bin. Additionally, recycling plastic
bottles can be a great help in reducing the pollution.
Recycling also helps cut down on the amount of trash thrown into landfills, so our garbage
doesn't take up as much space. Recycling also creates jobs for people who collect recyclable
things and work at places that turn them into new materials. Everyone knows recycling means
less trash going to our landfills but the greatest environmental benefit of recycling is the
conservation of energy and natural resources and the prevention of pollution that is generated
when a raw material is used to make a new product.
RECOMMENDATION
Plastic Pollution negatively impacts almost living every organisms in the world. Because
we are the source of plastic pollution, human being must take an action to improve the quality
of life. We should minimize the use in plastics in our daily lives and recycle the waste as much as
possible.
To make things better use an alternative for plastics, which in this case is using a reusable
plastic like plastic bottles into trash can, vase and etc. People would begin to use reusable bags
as soon as possible because doing so we could be able to cut down on the negative impact
created by plastics. Using recyclable plastics is something that should be done worldwide because
the impact that plastics has would be reduced.
Collecting all your plastic waste for a forth night or a month and see where the bulk of it
comes from. From there you can take action to reduce the plastic in your life. You can use plastic
bottles as a trash bin. You can use plastic bottles in someway.
The pollution problem in the environment shows that we should always apply the 5R’s in
our daily life in order for us to lessen our plastic waste. If we want the next generation to be able
to see the beauty of our planet, we must start to discipline ourselves. We must be responsible
where will we throw our waste. We should always apply the 5R’s so we'll be able to preserve our
planet
The researchers recommends that people should avoid using a single-use plastic. This also
suggests that people should start and practice 5R's (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle).
Instead of throwing it at a wrong place, there are other ways in reusing and recycling it aside
from making it as a trash bin. Those plastic bottles can be converted into DIY ideas, lanterns,
flower pot, etc. In this instance, this can be a help to lessen the pollution.
Recycling helps us to convert our old products into new useful products. In other words,
it is good for the environment. Since we are saving resources and are sending less trash to the
landfills, it helps in reducing air and water pollution.
