05 - 14 Steel Repairs

The document provides guidance on steel repairs for ships. It outlines various welding and repair procedures including: - Welding local defects with a maximum thickness tolerance of 5mm and 0.3mm and maximum welded area of 0.125m2. - Lamination repairs for plates over 1600mm wide for shell/strength deck and 800mm for other structural members. - Requirements for welding on hull plating below the water line including the use of low hydrogen electrodes and preheating material to 5°C minimum. - Comparable steel grades for normal and high strength structural steel including yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and temperature ranges.

STEEL REPAIRS

Welding local defects: Maximum thickness tolerance for plates & wide flats:
5 mm = 0.3 mm
Max. welded area = 0.125 m²

Welding preparation: Thickness not be reduced to below 80% of original thickness, to be

verified by ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye pen test

Lamination to be repaired by insert plates: Min. breadth of the plate to be repaired by insert:
1600 mm shell & strength deck plating i.w. of cruciform or T-joints
800 mm shell & strenght deck plating, primary members
600 mm other structural members

Weld spatters to be removed completely on: Shell plating; deck plating; tanks for chemical cargo, fresh water,
drinking water, lube oil, hydraulic oil

Welding on hull plating below water line: Low hydrogen electrodes to be used on normal & higher strength steel
Material to be preheated by torch to a minumum temperature of 5°C

Steel grades comparable to normal & high strength structural steel grades
