Abstract
There are different type of electronic diagrams including, a functional block, single
line, schematic, connection or wiring, and interconnection diagram. Three of the
most common diagrams are the schematic, single line and functional block diagram.
All diagrams have symbols that represent components of a circuit such as a resistor,
capacitor, voltage, inductor, and switch. Also, all diagrams represent the information
needed to construct a circuit and to identify and problems in the circuit.
Circuit diagrams also known as an electrical diagram, is a representation of a
circuit. The purpose of a circuit diagram is to show all the connection of a circuit and
understand how each connection works. The diagram is useful when testing, designing,
constructing and maintaining the circuit or system. There are different types of diagrams;
functional block diagram, schematic diagram, single line diagram, wiring diagram and
interconnection diagram. In most types of diagrams symbols are used to represent
elements in the circuit such a resistors, capacitors, anodes, inductors, voltages, etc. Three
useful diagrams that are common in the electrical engineering industry are schematic,
single line and functional block diagrams.
A schematic diagram represents elements of a circuit graphically. These types of
diagrams are use to layout a clear representation of a circuit to display information, also
to better understand how each component is connected. Nevertheless, the ways these
schematic diagrams are drawn are not going to look similar to the circuit constructed. The
purpose of a schematic diagram is to understand how the circuit works and to easily
construct a circuit. To draw a proper schematic diagram each component used must have
a proper value to derive the output.
A single line diagram is a representation of a power system by using the necessary
elements. The purpose of the single line diagram is to represent a network that shows the
main connections along with element such as resistors, voltage, resistance, output, etc.
Single line diagrams are drawn in the form of each symbol used, for instance
transformers, delta, and star are drawn on the side along the line.
A block diagram is different than a schematic and single line diagram. It provides
a view of the systems to be able to identify a point of interest or to identify any trouble
spots. This diagram does not have detailed information to be able to implement a circuit.
They are made of shapes like a square and circle with information on each block. The
main purpose of block diagrams is to focus on the input and output of a system. In other
words, block diagrams do not have any wiring connection to any components.
After designing a circuit in a schematic diagram or in a single line diagram it is
ready to be constructed in a printed circuit. Printed circuits is an electrical device in
which each component and wire is a thin coat of electrically conductive material. They
reduce the size and weight of all of the equipment and improve the reliability of the
circuits. There are different types of printed circuits like a multilayered and a double
sided. These circuits are used for many electronics such as a radio, television, computes,
etc.
CAD drawing of some Symbols
The following symbols are used to construct a circuit diagram.
Conclusion
The symbols demonstrated above are a very important component to design a
circuit diagram. Each component has different functions and should be set to the
proper values to derive the right output. Schematic diagrams are very informal and
are used to understand how each circuit works and where each element is
connected. These diagrams make it less complicated to construct a circuit.
Furthermore, a single line diagram is used for power systems and are design to
create a network that shows the main connection of a system and it also includes
resistors, transformers, inductors etc. And a function block diagram does not
include any of the following symbols mentioned. The purpose of these diagrams is to
focus on the input and output. Therefore these diagrams include shapes like circles
and squares with labels inside them. In conclusion the circuit diagrams are very
useful in the electric industry and help understand how each system works.
