Elman induction (English)
1) SETTING THE STAGE; The concept is simply to initiate a state of
mind ready for the project at hand. Simply say something like, “Close your
eyes and take a nice deep breath, a nice long deep one. And now as you
exhale allow yourself to relax all over, Get rid of all that surface tension”.
2) THE WAVE; “Now just imagine a wave of relaxation going from the top
of your head down your body, all the way down to your toes. You know you
can make your muscles so stiff they can’t get any stiffer, but now I want you
to do the opposite. Relax your muscles to the point they can’t get any more
relaxed - loose limp and relaxed, right down to your very toes.
3) THE WEDGE: Elman described hypnosis in two parts; the bypass of
the mind’s critical faculty and the addition of selective thinking. He defined

the critical faculty as that part of the mind that passes judgment and he
defined selective thinking as an idea that is accepted wholeheartedly.
The wedge is just the tool to help the client initiate bypass. One could use
other things to do this, even suggestibility tests. Elman sometimes used a
stiff finger, but it’s much easier and more discreet to do it with eyelids. The
idea is to have the client do something that goes against their normal critical
analysis. They know they can open their eyes any time they want to, but
here they find themselves with eyes that won’t work. This starts the wedge
of bypassing the critical faculty. Say something like this, Take your attention
to your eyelids and relax them to the point those eye muscles won’t work,
and when you’re sure they won’t work, test them to make sure they won’t
work.
If the client pops their eyes open here, no problem. Tell them, “No,
you're making sure they will work. Relax them to the point where they will
not work and when you're sure they won't work, test them. Test them hard.
Get complete relaxation in those muscles around the eyes
Watch them test and as you see the client moving their eyes in an effort
to open them but not opening them, then say, “Good, Now let that relaxation
go right down to your toes.”
Now the wedge is completed, the bypass has started. You can be
confident that your suggestions are becoming more and more powerful as
the bypass becomes greater.
THE VISITS: Elman, as a boy reading, Dr. Bernheim’s book, Suggestive
Therapeutics, understood the doctor to say that usually his patients didn’t go
into Somnambulism until the fifth visit. Having one appointment per week,
Elman imagined this taking over a month. And then with his sharp young
mind he thought, why not have the patients come each day for five days and
that would shorten it down to five days! Then he thought, why wait for each
day, why not have five appointments back to back in the same day and by
the time they come back the fifth time they would be ready for
somnambulism. Then Elman thought, why have them go in and out of the
office at all? Why not just have them go in and out of relaxation five times
in a row? With suggestions of going deeper he found he could shorten it to
four times (although you can do more if needed).
With your most convincing tone say something like this, “Now I’m going
to help you to go deeper relaxed, and you CAN go tremendously deeper. In
a moment I’m going to have you open your eyes and close them. When you
close them you’ll have doubled your relaxation, OK, open your eyes… close
them. Now notice how that relaxation increased.”
SECOND VISIT COMPLETED.
“And now, in a moment I’m going to have you open and close your eyes
again and you’ll be able to double the relaxation you now have. Ok, open
your eyes… close them …..NOW, notice the depth of relaxation coming in.”
THIRD VISIT COMPLETED.
“The third time we do this is the charm, you can be 10 times more relaxed,
just want it, it’s there for you. All right, open your eyes …..close them…
Now, really let go.”
FOURTH VISIT COMPLETED.
That’s it! Now for testing.
THE TESTS: The first test is for physical relaxation and is accomplished
by picking up an arm, finding it heavy and then dropping it with the
suggestion that when it drops you’ll go much deeper. Say something like
this, “Now you should have a good sense of physical relaxation, and in a
moment I’m going to pick up your right (or left) arm to check it. Don’t help
me at all, keep that relaxation in and it will feel to me as if I’m lifting a dead
fish.” Pick up the arm and if it’s heavy say, “That’s good, you have
wonderful physical relaxation, keep that relaxation and when I drop it, it
will flop back down like a wet dishrag. Let it flop, because when it does,
you’ll find yourself going deeper.” Drop the arm with a slight push to make
it seem to the client they’re even more relaxed then they thought they were
and say, deeper. If you find that the client is helping you lift the arm, say
“No No, don’t help me. Keep that relaxation in. Let the arm be totally
relaxed now and I’ll lift it again. All right good you’ve got it now.”
If the arm is still light, say, “Don’t you want to have a relaxed arm?”
Listen to the answer, and then coax them into letting it stay relaxed.
The second test is for somnambulism. It is tested by giving an accepted
suggestion for amnesia. Tell the client, “There are two types of relaxation,
physical and mental. You have shown you have the necessary physical
relaxation, now I’ll show you how to get the mental. In a moment I’m going
to have you say the numbers backwards starting from one hundred. With
each number you say, double the mental relaxation you now have and you’ll
find that by the time you get to 97 or before, (Elman often just said a few or
a couple numbers, or 98) the numbers will fade right out of your mind. Now
start from one hundred and make that happen. The client says 100 and you
say, “relax your mind,” 99, “double the relaxation,” 98, “now start letting

them fade, say the last number and they’ll be gone,” 97, “and now they’re
gone.” Wait a few seconds to see if the client goes to 96, if not, say, that’s a
nice feeling isn’t it? Client replies yes or nods and then ask, “Are they
gone?” With the answer of yes, you have accomplished your goal,
somnambulism.
If they keep counting past 97, then stop them and say, “OK now we’ll do
that again but this time JUST WANT to loose the numbers and if you want
them to disappear you’ll find that they do disappear. Start at one hundred
now, 100 relax (and if need be suggest slower or softer), 99, double it, 98,
push them out, I can’t do it for you, you must dispel them from your mind
now. Most of the time the client will lose the numbers this time. If not,
often it’s just because the numbers are automatically popping up and the
client just doesn’t know how to let them go but wants to. Elman resorted to
another test then which is simple to learn. He would tell them that in a
moment he was going to write their name with his finger on their index
finger. As he was writing it they could see it on the blackboard of their
mind. As you write, ask, “Do you see it?” Yes. “Ok then in a moment
you’ll be amazed because as I erase it from your finger (Rub the finger) it’s
being erased right out of your mind, it’s gone gone gone, and you won’t
remember what I wrote,, its faded right out, faded to nothing. All gone isn’t
it? What did I write? Usually the client won’t answer, and the amnesia test
is complete.
Once you get the somnambulism then you are on your way to finding the
cause and fixing it permanently using various hypnotic uncovering
techniques.
One interesting end note is that when Elman emerged his client he ended
by saying something like, “in a moment I’ll have you open your eyes and
when you do - notice how good you feel. Now open your eyes. How do you
feel?” Why was it so important that the client feel good? Solely because
they are in an auto-hypnotic state while they are emerging and could easily
give themselves a negative suggestion such as my head hurts, etc. To
preclude any negative auto-suggestions, Elman gave a positive suggestion
and had them repeat it.
