Since its introduction more than 75 years ago, electrosurgery has become one of the most widely used technologies
in the operating room. Now used in about 80% of all surgical procedures, it has reduced both operating and patient
recovery times and has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for surgeons.

Despite its benefits, electrosurgery-related injuries are among the most common incidents in U.S. Food and Drug
Administration and ECRI problem-reporting databases. Reports include a wide range of serious incidents, from
third-degree burns to vessel perforations and even death from surgical fire. Unfortunately, many of these injuries
could have been easily prevented if critical electrosurgery patient safety measures had been followed by the hospital
or healthcare facility.
