Instructions:

Please answer the following questions using the models provided in this handout. You may use
your lecture notes and textbook. The answers should be answered in the space provided. Please
complete this assignment according to the roles assigned to each student in the group.

Model 1: The scientific method

1. What is the difference between a science and an art?

2. Is the scientific method used in nutritional science? Give an example.

3. Can you use the scientific method to answer the following questions?

Eating ice cream daily can lead to increase in body weight.

Physical activity can reduce the chances of getting type II diabetes.

Taking diet pills will lead to permanent weight loss.

Using tanning beds may lead to skin cancer.

4. Choose one of the scenarios above and design a simple experiment to prove or disprove your
hypothesis.

MODEL 2

5. The Center of Disease Control reports that more than one third of all Americans are obese.
From Model 2, which group has the highest rate of obesity and which the least? Among men and
women, which group shows a greater difference and which a smaller difference in obesity rates?

6. What are some health conditions that are linked to obesity? How does that affect the overall
population?

7. Have you seen any change in the serving sizes of your favorite fast food restaurants in the past
five years?

8. Do you think mentioning the number of calories per serving size in a restaurant helps the
consumer choose an appropriate food item?

MODEL 3: Energy expenditure in a day

9. In model 3, a lady is seen reclining. But almost 60-65% of the energy is expended here?
Why? What is BMR?

10. What are factors that affect BMR? List the factors that affect BMR and explain how? (Does
the factor increase or decrease BMR? There are about 8 factors. Sickness could be a factor, but
assume everyone is healthy.
