INTRODUCTION
At some point in your career you will have to write a letter of application. This is probably one of the most
important letters you will ever have to write.
The employer will probably have dozens of letters in response to their advertisement and yours needs to
stand out from the rest. You must use this opportunity to create the right impression.
LET’S WARM UP
Look for a partner. Imagine that you have just graduated from college and you decided to apply for a
job. Below, you will see three jobs posting in Region three (3). Choose one from the three and write job
application letter for the chosen job. Use the space provided for your letter

Before you secure the job you want to achieve after graduating from college, you need to learn the
application process. It all starts with your job application letter and resume.
What is a job application letter?
A job application letter or cover letter is a type of personal business correspondence which states
your intention to work in a particular organization. It should be enclosed every time you send your
resume. Some online job applications do not require application letter, corporate experts say that
employers are more likely to read resume which is accompanied by a cover letter.
A cover letter can be a immediate response to job advertisement , an unsolicited inquirey to a
prospective employer. It is important you research for about the company and the job you are
applying.
Parts of Cover Letter
Introduction
1. Introduce your self and state you purpose in writing to the receiver
2. Indicate your source of information in learning bout the job vacancy
3. Add an interesting statement about yourself so the reader will continue reading your letter
4. Show your enthusiasm to work in the company
Body
1. Present your work experience, academic qualifications, trainings , and some personal qualities with
specific evidence.
2. Organize your paragraph accordingly.
3. Explain the benefits to the employers if they hire you.
4. In the last part of the body, refer the reader to a specific prt of the resume tht suggest the strongest
credentials for the position.
Conclusion
1. Indicate your interest for an interview at a time most convenient to the employer.
2. Indicate how the interviewer can contact you
3. Express an expectation of a positive response from the employer
4. Thank the employer
Tips in Preparing Cover
Content
1. Never begin your letter with bland and generic phrases such as “ Enclosed is my resume for…”. To be
more creative, you my use:
a. Begin with question that stimulates the reader’s interest.
b. Start out with a quote that applies to the business types
c. Explain how you learned about the job opening you are applying for.
2. A cover letter must not simply repeat the content your resume. Emphasize concrete examples
3. Address the letter to specific person. If you do not know the specific addressee, call the compny and
ask.
4. Be specific with the position your re applying for. Do not use general vacancies
5. Avoid superfluous information.
6. Focus on what you can do for the company. Remember that they are looking for their own benefit.
7. Avoid mentioning opinions about yourself. When you claim one, be sure to support it with specific and
factual evidence
8. Highlight two or three of your most significant accomplishment or abilities.
9. Use the active voice to indicate a dynamic tone, as well as powerful verbs that denote action.
10. Be sure to have correct grammar, spelling , vocabulary, and usage. Void jargon, clichés, nd verbosity.
11. Be direct to the point to keep the attention of your reader.
12. Be factul . Never misrepresent yourself by overstating your experience and skills. In short, do not
exaggerate.
13. Do not beg for the job; that is , do not write sentences such, “ Please call today! I’ll be waiting by the
phone. I am desperately eager to start
14. As you write, imagine that you are writing script for your interview.
15. Match your letter to the job description and job requirements.
Format and Mechanics
1. Use letter- sized bond paper; limit the letter to one to two pages
2. Always sign the letter.
3. Use a letterhead which includes your full name, address, phone number, and email address.
4. Use a business letter format ( block, fill block, semi-block or , simplified)
5. Use to 1- 1.5 – inch margin on all sides.
6. Do not cram the text t the upper half or lower half of the page. Be sure to have appropriate pge fill.
7. Use white or off- white paper.
8. Use font size of at least 10 points and maximum of 12.
