INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY: (Connect to prior knowledge—or create new knowledge)
● The teacher will begin the activity by asking students what they know about
Germany. Ex. Famous people from Germany, Famous traditions from Germany
etc.
● The teacher will then ask if anyone has any German family or are German.
● Next the teacher will ask if anyone has heard of Oktoberfest.
● The teacher will then state the reasons Oktoberfest is celebrated:
○ Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese von Sachsen-
Hildburghausen and Oktoberfest was a celebration of this marriage.
○ Oktoberfest celebrated a successful harvest that year.
● The teacher will explain to the students that now Oktoberfest has expanded to
include horse races, games, rides, and music.
● Next the teacher will explain that during Oktoberfest people who are celebrating
wear a special type of hat called the Edelweiss hat.
● The teacher will then project the picture of the two girls wearing their Edelweiss
hats.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
● The students will now begin to create their own edelweiss hat!
● The teacher will hand out a large piece of construction paper to each student.
● The teacher will instruct the students to fold the piece of construction paper in
half.
● Next the teacher will demonstrate the next step which is to fold the creased
corners of the folded construction paper and fold them inward towards the
middle.
● On the bottom of the paper the students and teacher will then fold the bottom up
on both sides to form the brim of their hat.
● Next the teacher will hand out the feathers (one per student) and the students will
the tuck and glue their feather into the brim of their hat (See Sample)
● After the students have put their feather on their hat they will then be passed out
bags of foam shapes by the teacher to decorate their hat in place of the
traditional flower.
● After students have completed their decorating they will be able to use hole
punches to punch a hole into each side of the brim of their hat.
● After the holes are in place the student will run a piece of yarn through them both
and tie it so they have a strap to secure the hat to their head.
